Intro and advice

Hey Everybody, My name is Danny, I usually hang around the more techie sites but my latest project plan brings me here...
I have three young kids and my 4yr old daughter has thoroughly mastered her powerwheels. I cant really drive a gas powered kart around my street, so Im going to build an electric one.
quick background, Im and electrical engineer so schematics, electronics and wiring is no problem (though I deal mostly on a smaller scale), my Dad and brother are both electricians and weld offroad jeeps as a hobby, so that will come in handy...

My end goal, in a few years, would be a nicely powered two seater kart that can hold about 300lbs and drive around in the grass/dirt at decent speeds (being 25-35mph). But since my kids are really small still, I am just looking for a frame that can handle the end goal, but an initial motor setup that can handle 10-15mph on flat ground with my daughter and I in it. As much as I would love to rip out bits and pieces of old vehicles it make it from scratch, I just dont have the time for such fun, so I need some advice on a small kit.
From what Ive basically read I think something in the 800-1000W motor at 36V should be able to meets my needs, is that a decent assumption?
if so would something like this work

I would just need to by the pedal kit for it?

Also, to make sure I understood the main setup... I basically need the following
-first find a decent frame (with solid steering and brake assemblies
-add the motor with correct sprockets and heavy duty chain
-add controller that is rated more then the motor will draw
-wire in the pedal kit to the controller
-and for safety, add a low power kill switch that controls the high current to the motor/batteries
-then spec out some deap cycle batteries that meet the volt level and have enough Amp-hrs

do that pretty much sum it up?

me and my friends are building a go kart , we are having problrms calculating the tie rod length and the spindle angle so that the leat inside turning & outside turning angles are unaltered....can somebody help?

Dcastillo, welcome to the forum.

You have the list pretty much done, i would add a fuse to the setup that you have listed. I suggest getting the 36v 1000 watts motor and with Kelly controller. I mentioned Kelly controller because is programable to decrease or increase speed for when kids ride or adult. They are other controller that can do that as well but cost twice as much. If you try to safe space and weight, i recommend LiFePO4 battery pack (Lithium Ion), beware they are expensive. Gd luck

Hey Fresh101 (or anyone else)...
finally picked up my cart frame... now onto the motor/controller...

I was originally looking to buy a new 1000W motor and then upgrade later on once my daughter gets the hang of it... But now Im wondering if, for about the same price, I should just get a larger used golfcart motor, I believe most of them are well over 1000W, and I could always under volt it in the beginning...

for the controller, does this seem like it would be a good buy

gives me from 24-48V and (what I think) is more then enough current to move a little two seater cart..

Looks cool on the new buy. You might have to reinforce the frame for the batteries, If you have enough space for them and the other electrics.

thanx.... the guy I bought it from is about 200lbs and road it with his 9yr old nephew... I also got on it and it is surprisingly solid (im 185) I shouldnt need too much room for the batteries since I dont plan on needing it to run for to long, 15-30 min should be just fine... but if I change my mind I could easily weld a few more inches on the back if needed...
