Hey Everybody, My name is Danny, I usually hang around the more techie sites but my latest project plan brings me here...
I have three young kids and my 4yr old daughter has thoroughly mastered her powerwheels. I cant really drive a gas powered kart around my street, so Im going to build an electric one.
quick background, Im and electrical engineer so schematics, electronics and wiring is no problem (though I deal mostly on a smaller scale), my Dad and brother are both electricians and weld offroad jeeps as a hobby, so that will come in handy...
My end goal, in a few years, would be a nicely powered two seater kart that can hold about 300lbs and drive around in the grass/dirt at decent speeds (being 25-35mph). But since my kids are really small still, I am just looking for a frame that can handle the end goal, but an initial motor setup that can handle 10-15mph on flat ground with my daughter and I in it. As much as I would love to rip out bits and pieces of old vehicles it make it from scratch, I just dont have the time for such fun, so I need some advice on a small kit.
From what Ive basically read I think something in the 800-1000W motor at 36V should be able to meets my needs, is that a decent assumption?
if so would something like this work

I would just need to by the pedal kit for it?
Also, to make sure I understood the main setup... I basically need the following
-first find a decent frame (with solid steering and brake assemblies
-add the motor with correct sprockets and heavy duty chain
-add controller that is rated more then the motor will draw
-wire in the pedal kit to the controller
-and for safety, add a low power kill switch that controls the high current to the motor/batteries
-then spec out some deap cycle batteries that meet the volt level and have enough Amp-hrs
do that pretty much sum it up?
