Well, remember my little Idea of advancing the cam in my briggs I had a couple days back? Well, today I thought oh, what the heck, I need to change the oil anyways. So, after draining the oil I proceeded to take off the cover, and then advanced the cam 3 teeth (not sure how many degrees that is, probably like 7~8). Put the cover back on, oiled it up, and right away as I pulled it I could notice the compression was higher (the easy spin on mine closes the intake valve late to make it easier to pull, so by advancing the cam it would make the intake valve close earlier, raising compression). It took maybe one more pull than normal to start. Once it did though, it did feel a lot more powerful. You know how normal briggs engines idle at about 1200? It was Idling at about 650-800rpm consistently! Sounds really lopey at idle too, which I like (with a bone stock briggs 5 hp!). Acceleration didn't seem very much affected by the change, but once it got around the 3000 rpm range, it started to really pull hard and seemed to really...I don't know...open up more(kind of expected). In deceleration, I noticed it didn't backfire nearly as much as stock, if any at all. It seems this is a worthwhile mod to me, and costs you nothing. Hope this helps anyone wanting to mod!

I think that having a Briggs with the "easy spin" starting system might get ok results by this mod. But how many times did it rip the cord out of your hand (haha)? And the backfiring was not an engine issue, it would be from the carb. It was running a tad bit on the rich side. That is normal.

Other opinions/thoughts?

You can get performance as good as 94ss or better on eBay for $25 these days. I saw a torque WEB10 Horstsman go for $25 yesterday night. But I'm just a-waitin for that 00-7...

JMO, but I still wouldn't do this to any engine. If this could have been done, wouldn't you be hearing is everywhere? I've heard somewhere you can advance (or retard... no idea, been a long time) the cam by one tooth to gain top end. But 3?!

If you retarded the cam with easy spin it would lose compression rally bad and would probably drop down to like 3.5 hp.

I dunno, It's not like it could actually really damage something bad, (except maybe your hand if it jerks the cord out). Seemed like a good idea to me, and 3 teeth really isn't that much if you look at the cam gear

Ive used a cord jerker before(heavily abused briggs 8 horse, spark too advanced) , learned real quick to use my fingertips and pull it as hard and fast as I possibly could.
