why is the spark plug on the side of the head?

Looks like a Briggs model Y. A better view of carb would tell me for sure. I have one that (now) runs.
Was used to power washing machines and is very heavy. Too heavy to power a minibike.
Only about 1/2 hp.
Particular spark plug location was common on Briggs engines until about 1949.

I always wondered about the gas powered washers.
How many men came home at 6, only to find their wives dead on the laundry room floor from CO poisoning?

Okay, but it was funny to me. Cool as they are, why an I/C engine? It's not like they didn't have electricity in the 30's...

probably because they were more relaible. power back then wasnt as available as today. and also, you can take them to places like cabins and remote areas that dont have electricity.

Were used mostly on farms.
There were a few of these washers around when I was young here on Long Island.

ive never seen one, but from pictures they look like they are built like tanks.
