If it was mine I'd bevel the edge of the crack then bolt the cases together with that piece in place and have them weld all but the edges where it contacts the other case then take it apart and finish the welds, that would insure the piece doesn't get welded in crooked. Of course that all depends on you finding a competent welder that will work for a dozen donuts.

if they have a tig welder, it should be very possible, i know its possible to weld cast aluminum... same as welding lifter bores in 5hp briggs. i like the idea of bolting it all together then welding so its straight on there. like toofarnorth said.

also the first time i took my 5hp briggs apart, i used the claws of a hammer to pry it off, i got the engine after it sat outside in rain/weather for 2yrs, and the crankshaft was rusty around the point of the oilseal, making it really hard to get off.

try seeing if yours is rusty there too, i sanded mine with sand paper, not too much tho, just to take the rust off, the put a little oil on it.

Good luck,
BAMBY

You'll have to deck the mating surfaces after the repair.

Durafix works very well for those who know how to use it, and this is the exact situation durafix is marketed for, but there are a couple of tricks.

Use an oxy/map torch rather than straight propane. Aluminum wicks heat away from the repair site very quickly so keeping enough heat in the repair area will be difficult.

With durafix and similar products, cleanliness is your friend. Wiping it with a rag is not good enough as dirt attracts the durafix for an incomplete joint. Clean, clean, clean then finish off the area with brake cleaner as it evporates entirely.

I would put the piece back, clamp it in place, then using an angle grinder notch the crack joint a little bit and solder that with the durafix rods so I could get more penetration/wicking into the joint.

Cast aluminum can be welded by a practiced tig welder or with a nickel-based rod using an oxy/acetelyne torch. *I* can't do it but cast aluminum is welded all the time in the automotive industry. Aluminum engine blocks and cylinder heads are cast, as are some power steering pump cases, alternator cases, and so on.

I know someone that soldered aluminum together with durafix then tried to destroy it and he couldn't get the repair to fail, so I would give it a try on this repair if you can find some.

What you do is heat the work, pull the flame away, then dab the rod into the crack. If it doesn't dab, pull the rod away, keep heating, then dry again.

They also sell special crayons that melt a hair before it's hot enough for those new to durafix.

NEVER HEAT THE ROD. Only the work!
