I finally got my gokart up and running. It was sitting for 25+ years. It is supposed to be for my kids ,but I want it.
I put a 6.5 clone motor on it now I want to go faster.

My question is should I pick up the bigger clone and do some modifications to that, or should I just modify the 6.5. HF has the sale in march and I am trying to figure if it is worth it to go for the bigger horse power engine.

Depending on your setup, a larger industrial engine likely will NOT cause you to go faster. It may cause you to get to top speed faster, but that's about it. IF your 6.5 is struggling to get you up to speed, a larger engine will combat that. So will gearing a bit lower, but that is likely to compromise top speed. If your 6.5 is NOT breaking a sweat getting you up to speed, gear it a little higher. If THAT causes it to work too hard you can a) Restore the original gearing and mod the engine for higher RPM (remove governor)
or b) Go to a larger engine (mods optional)
Basically, gear it as high as you can WITHOUT overworking the engine or overheating the clutch, and that's your top speed at a governed 3600 rpm. From there, you need more RPM. -OR-
Swap in a much higher revving engine (bike, quad, sled, etc), gear down a little, and we'll see you at the salt flats!!!

VGK the seat has been on there since I can remember. It looks like it might be custom made

I will give the gearing a shot. I think next up is removing the governor.
