If I were to put a sprocket on the shaft in the circled area, would the limited slip diff still operate normal Vs having the chain on the actual unit

Yes, but the axle would never be able to take the bending forces. But if you went to a solid axle you’d be good!

No it would not.

The only way the LSD works is by input going where it was intended... if you put a 3rd party fixture and gear on where indicated and you do little more than spin the opposite tire in the opposite direction at the same RPM; or worse explode the differential.

That's assuming it's actually a 2wd limited slip unit.
