Looks like a black lump from here.

If it is foam, wash it out with dish soap and warm water. Wring it out in a clean towel. Pour a teaspoon of clean engine oil on it, and wring it in your hands until the oil is evenly distributed.

Why would any bad gasket cause any problem? Gaskets keep things in that shouldn't go out, and keep things out that shouldn't go in. In this case, we're talking about air... A bunch of air being drawn in at a carb base gasket (or boot) will throw your air/fuel mix out the window.

Your A/F mix would appear to be of some importance...

Don't use gasket sealer. Always creates more problems in the future. Get some real gaskets or gasket material and do it right the first time.

You could also use cereal boxes.

i had a look at the gasket in the carb and it was split at the end so i took off the gasket and used some gasket maker and rubbed abit into the grove and put the old gasket back down on it so it would stick the split ,the old gasket wasnt bad it was just split and i joined it back so hopefully this will work il have to let it set now and put it back together tomoro

Can you please, please make use of the "EDIT" button and avoid the multiple posts?

I doubt you can make a cardboard bowl gasket accurately enough. Plus, on many carbs, that thickness is pretty critical.
