Ideas on starting kart.

Hey guys, i have no ideas about Go Karts what so ever but i would like some help.

A mate of mine, got a small go kart that we are having issues starting it.

We can start it on a stand by using a rachet strap to spin the wheel or alternatively we can just push it down a steep hill. At the moment we are having issues keeping it running but when we get it up and running, does anyone have an ideas about an easier way to start it?

I assume a rip cord would be to hard to retro fit to a old motor.

What is generally involved in putting a rip cord in?

Not too much really, its pretty much all you can see.

Somewhat, but like i said, i dont know much about these at all, and the more info i can gather on these the better.

That is a high perfomance kart engine (15HP+) and it will be very dificult to start with a recoil starter and i am sure you can buy starter kits for the Recoil and electric... But while cold i will hate to be the one pulling on the chord and i dont think they will idle well cold so it is almost a 2 man job any way, But than again you are better of waiting till some one here with more hands on expeirence to ad there point of view!

You can't really.

You don't have a clutch, it's a proper race kart.

The generally accepted way to start them is to lift the back up and run along holding that in the air Then when you've got a fair bit of speed up drop it. It should then start and be idling along, you now have to try and jump into the kart whilst its moving along with out stopping it. Simple hay?

Ah bummer, thanks heaps guys.

Now i just need to work on why its not running properly, it would start and then die when you try to accelerate, we replaced the fuel filter but its still doing the same thing, so im going to get some clear hose from Bunnings and replace the whole lot, and see if that helps anything.

Do you let it warm up before trying to accelerate?

Yep, you got a Yamaha KT100 engine. I've never heard of any with a pull start installed. Over here in the states, most guys that race that engine install a disc type clutch and use a kart starter to fire up the engine.

Here's a KT100 with a clutch:
(these guys run special motor mounts that serve as a 3-bearing support for the crankshaft)

This kart starter has a Allen head tip that fits into the bolt head at the end of the crankshaft in the center of the clutch:
