howdy

the_smokin_dodge here from middle of nowhere east texas

i found this forum after a bit of searching for a problem with a new toy i have aquired. i was at tractor supply with some friends and saw a baja dirt bug and we decided to pick it up. after riding it for a while we decided it needed some more power. we ripped out the 91cc to save for our wagoncart project and put in a 5hp horizontal briggs with a decked head (.020" removed).

now its on to further mods - upgraded gears and lights - just gotta figure out how to get power from the magneto without grounding out the system.

i plan on doing a kart project soon and helping my buddy with his wagon kart. then the ultimate - a streetcart with a v-twin bike motor in it.

ill be finishing my degree this summer in ag mechanics and am very knowledgeable in metalworking/welding and fabrication as well as mechanical (i put a subaru engine into a volkswagen van) and hope to contribute as best i can to the forum. i cant wait to start building a contributing.

Your Magneto cant function as a charging system. The electric start Briggs engines came with a separate charging coil. I believe their flywheels might have also been equipped with a different magnet setup to accommodate the charging coil. Some models also used an externally mounted rectifier/voltage regulator. If you can locate these components, you could probably install them on your engine.

welcome smokin dodge. Are you keeping the engine stock?

nope KieranM - engine is not stock. the new 5hp swap has a decked head - and i plan on doing a ringjob soon as its running very rich and the oil gets nasty fast.
