i have a 3.5hp briggs stratton mini bike got it for free but the engine is weird when i pull its like it seizes but if you pull harder its easy to pull and needs a little rewinding its not pull start its the engine p.s. im new
i need help!

I think I know why the engine is so hard to start. It is because it is so blurry. LOL
Seriously though, it could just be your pull start that is the problem. Maybe you can take it off and see if there is something obstructing the rope, or see if the spring is still wound properly. The fact that you have to wind it back (how do you do that), means there is something not right. Do you mean that you have to wind the rope back in?

Check the plastic "reel" holds the rope.. sometimes they break.. if its not seating on the spring properly it will not rewind.. and could potentially be hard to pull.

That motor looks pretty new.....Probably has two plastic ears that spin out centrifugally.....There are a several things that can go wrong with that set-up...including the fact that if it's like I think- the whole assembly is held in place by bent over sheetmetal tabs and if they get just a bit of slop the cogs jump out of place.....
Of course it's kinda like an egg- 'till you crack it open you don't know if you'll find a yolk or a chicken......

I wouldn't give up on it. Those 5hp briggs are GREAT engines..
VERY easy to rebuild/service.

Do you get a good amount of compression when you pull hard? Check your spark plug and see if its black. If it is dip it in gas a few times take it out put it back in. If that doesn't help try oiling the bearing on the flywheel part of the pull start.

Ditto Porboy. Unless that is an I/C engine there are no bearings to spin. Please elaborate on the spun bearing.

Not an I/C so you are correct NO bearings in there.. that's a cool bore bushing block.

could be a number of things. does it run? sounds like maybe the rope is binding up in the starter. that happens when a rope that is too thick is used. you would hear grinding if the coil was rubbing. how does the oil look. its always a good idea to pull off the head and clean it up and inspect the bore so you know what you have. disconnect the chain to rule out the clutch.

Remove the flywheel shroud and see if you can turn the engine by using the flywheel, this will eliminate the pull start. If the engine turns over freely, you know the problem is in the starter clutch/pull start. If not the problem is some where else in the engine. Another question. Have you checked the oil in that engine? It could be trying hydro lock.justin38

Also it shot gas down the carb and pulled and it made a retardley loud pop scared me sh!t less

Yeah- we're back to pulling the shroud (starter cover) again. ...Only this time you need to take the nut off the flywheel and check the key. The slot in the flywheel and the crankshaft should line up....
If they do- then your cam is out of sync and you will have to go inside the engine. ..
But everything is pointing to a timing issue IMHO at this point.
