i would suggest the HF 212cc predator engine. i would also suggest checking you local craigslist for karts if you dont have amazing fabrication abilities

Welcome and its nice to see someone so close to del rio on this forum.

Anyways... it looks like you dont know much about karts or engines. In order for us to give you detailed help, you need to answer these questions...
How fast do you want it to go
Is the axel a differential axel
if a diferential, what is the gear ratio
how big of wheels
and offroad, racing, street, or what kind of kart?
and how big of an engije are you planning on getting?

P.S. there is a lot of math involved, you cant just put an engine and a few sprockets in there and expect it to go. it requires a lot of planning. if your really up for building a kart, then thats great, but just remember that it wont be as easy as you think. not trying to scare you away from your build, but im just giving it toyou straight

I agree with the wingnut, you cant just slap it together and go 60mph. You need to supply all the details you want like speed acceleration and type of cart, link some pictures to frame examples or engine examples. Their are many guys on here that have lots of experiance and skill. We will all pitch in to help you out.

I just bought my first kart, and it was complete minus a few small bolts and engine for 150. Plus 120 for a 6.5 predator engine, and I"m really happy I didn't buy a messed up basket case 4 wheeler and start trying to make it a kart. plus, a messed up 4 wheeler would have cost me a lot more. When my wife and daughter get more comfortable with the kart, I might try to add a better suspension over the winter. Baby steps are good, healthy steps for people like you and me who are just getting into this.

60 to 80 mph for a first kart build is NOT realistic. think smaller... much smaller. unless you wanna drop $2000+ on a kart.

be more specific about your budget and your fabrication skills. don't make us guess everything. :)

You need to decide what you want, first. 80 MPH is only going to happen with a serious race kart (bring your checkbook). In fact, 60 isn't likely to happen without a good budget. In both cases, they will need to be full-on race karts. Tall tires and race karts is not happening, either. If you want tall tires, look towards a fun/yard/offroad kart or buggy. The combination of noob fabrication and high speeds is a guaranteed date with your maker. When your @ss is on the line, there's no room for booger welds and duct tape.

Now- to put things into perspective, 40-45MPH is faster than you think it is. With your butt only a few inches off the ground, things seem faster than they are. It is also a much more realistic target.

Since I'm forced to assume that you've never fabricated a vehicle, my advice is this: Shop around for a kart that meets your desires, whether it's complete and needs a bit of wrenching, or no engine, or whatever. Fix it up, have fun, and get intimately familiar with the workings of a machine. Start modifying it, changing things, and learning what you can do. Eventually, you can work toward building your own that will be your "ideal" machine.

:iagree: 45mph seems like much faster than it really is and if you plan to go as big as it sounds like you want to you will have to have deeeeeep pockets and plenty of know how and tools lots of quality tools I would recamend making a cheep yard kart and useing that experience to build a better faster kart :D

Yeah what your talking about is a go kart plan. Here, go to spidercarts.com, you can get a plan for around 30 bucks and it shows you how to build it and everything.

To gain kmowledge i just poked around forums basically and looked up what each word meant and eventually pieced it all together on my own. Itl take a while but the knowledge is a highly usable skill

And if you were to run your engine at max rpm for 2 days you might reach 60 but realistically a go kart going at 60 or 80mhp is scary as hell and will make you pass out haha. Especially here on the border where me and you live haha

Well he wants to build a kart, he doesnt want to buy it.

If you dont want to buy an already made kart, and your a beginner, then i would highly suggest spidercarts. They have some nice selections.

Well he wants to build a kart, he doesnt want to buy it.

While that may be true, many "noobs" don't fully realize what they are up against when starting out for the first time. The proof is in the posts (no insult intended). It is up to the more experienced members of this forum to help a new guy see what he is facing, assess his own skills, and guide him in the right direction.

There are three things of the utmost importance to consider, and they all boil down to the same thing: Not dying. Important? You decide...

*Frame building: Should NOT be your first welding/fab project. Can you picture a structural failure at the speeds mentioned above?

*Steering and frontend geometry: These components must not only be well-built to hold up under strain (picture failure again), but well-engineered. A steering wheel and two pivoting spindles is not enough. You can point the wheels somewhere, but will the vehicle go where you point it, when you really need it to.

*Braking. A vehicle must be able to stop at least as well as it can go. You're about to break your speed record... You miscalculate the corner at that speed... You go for the binders... And... Nothing! Or maybe, unexpected lockup. Bummer dood. You were the fastest...

The intention of this post is not so much to spook a new guy away from a project, but to put things in perspective. For most people, it is a much better idea to start off small and work your way up. Baby steps, people.

I see what you are getting at, and go kart plans cover all of that.

The brakes are hydrolic
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/1-or-1-14-Hydraulic-Brake-Kit---Red-600505R-or-600510R-5781

And also you can hire a welder to weld the frame, and if you dont want to do that it comes with a beginners guide to welding.

Or if they dont want to make the frame, kits are also availible.
http://gokartsusa.com/go-kart-kits.aspx

I totally agree with what your saying. All that i am saying is that a go kart plan or kit would be easy enough for a beginner.

And mysteryboy i do agree with what your saying, i didnt mean to come actoss as ignorant.

Fair enough. I think the magic word is "awareness".

*But again, I'm coughing up hairballs at "beginner and welding". At the very, very least, I would suggest spending a LOT of time practicing on scrap tube and plate before undertaking the frame, and at least "plan" frame at that- if not a kit.
