Hey all, i need a little bit of help on rebuilding this engine. its a Kool Bore 5hp flathead briggs that was on a gokart i got in a trade.

i took it apart to rebuild it but didnt take pictures before tear down, but trust me it was bad. the reason for the tear down was the carb was dirty so as i took bolt by bolt off i ended with the engine completly apart lol.

i said what the heck and started buying parts this is the list of what i have now at the moment.

DYNO CAMS 94-SS
BILLET LIFTERS
2 NEW EXAUST VALVE SPRINGS (ONE FOR INTAKE ONE FOR EXHAUST, ARC TOLD ME THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA)
NEW INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVE
ARC BILLET ROD STOCK LENGTH
ARC BILLET ALUMINUM FLYWHEEL
I MILLED THE HEAD 0.020 DOWN
E3 SPARK PLUG
NEW GASKETS
IM WAITING ON A ROBERTSONS TORQUE TUBES 3 STAGE PIPE(SHOULD GET HERE TOMORROW)
REMOVED GOVERNER.
NEW DIAPHRAM SPRING AND CAP
INTAKE AND FUN POWER VELOCITY ADAPTER.

I think that this is it.

ok my question the cam card says "timing 30-32 degrees btdc"
how do i control that? I mean is that something very significant? its not for racing just for the road in front of the house.

also how do i add pics i have them on my desktop.

Dude, that's wild. I have my Flathead block sitting on my desk painted the same color as yours, with the same cam next to it.. lol

You can get offset flywheel keys to advance the timing. I'm sure these days someone has a tutorial on it posted somewhere. I ran mine with stock timing and it did ok, after the rebuild it'll be a little more advanced though.

:wai: The correct way is to use a degree wheel. Or you time it in the hole. What piston are you using? The reason I am asking is, Kool-Bore engine use a chrome plated piston.I have found that using an old exhaust spring on the intake works best.

i am using a stock chromed piston couldnt find any aftermarket chromed stock style pistons. what do you mean time it in the hole? like get a flywheel offset key?

on another note i cant get the pull starter bolt back in its like the inner diameter has shrunk :mad2: im filing it down a little bit to see if that works.

i do have a question on how to preset the carb for ease of starting. do i put the needle out all the way in a little? whats factory spec?

The timing recommendation on the cam card is spark timing, not valve timing.

Offset key for the flywheel will take care of that.

for the cam, just line up the 2 dots.

For the carb, run the needle all the way down, then back out 1.5 turns.

:wai:DeathStar89, I should have been more specific in my post.As for the offset keys, you have to have a base number to start with. Rubidoj, If you want the spark timing according to the cam card, degree the cam. Its been awhile since I have spark timed, using the in hole method. I will get back to you on the procedure. I use .012 air gap for the mag. I would like to see a picture of the mag./ part number with two wires. As the two wire mag. that I am aware of, is used for points or it could be for low oil shut down. Definitively not for charging the battery.

i got the wires they were for kill switches so im just going to use one under the steering wheel. i used a .010 feeler gauge on the coil to flywheel gap. how much oil do i add to the engine? im running royal purple, ive heard of some guys running lower that stock oil amounts to reduce windage friction, how much should i use?

UPDATE: Just waiting on the oil amount so i could pour it in and fire her up!! anxiety is kicking in lol.

If it's not a racing kart, I don't think I'd worry much about it. Might pick up one of these Harbor Freight non-contact, infared temp guns to use on it when you stop - I'm guessing for tuning the carb rich/lean?
