I'm building a bit of a weird project, I'm straping a 3 hp engine I found on Craigslist to a longboard because it sounds fun, the only problem being that I can't weld and have a very tight budget. So far, I have the engine running, a throttle worked out, a dead man switch and the mounting for the engine, it will be behind the board and will drive a fifth wheel so I don't have to deal with getting a sprocket on a skateboard wheel. The only problem is the board behind the skateboard is made of wood, and I have no idea how to attach a single wheel with bearings to a wooden board. I was going to use the axle and wheel off of a dolly but after reading up it doesn't seem smart, I'm going to have a sprocket on the wheel with around 60ish teeth so I can't use a small wheel and I don't know how to attach a sprocket to a kids bike wheel and then mount it to wood, any help would be great.

Obviously it's going to be some kind of frame hanging off the back that supports the engine plus an axle and a wheel.

Figure on the back portion of a mini bike (idea-wise) with a sprocket attached to a wheel, a chain and clutch.

Photos please or an extremely detailed explanation of the engine and parts you have, plus the dimensions of the board. Scratch that, just give us photos.

I'd acquire some scrap sheet metal to build your engine mount and bolt some angle iron to it to attach to your board.

I did a quick and dirty drawing (not to scale) to illustrate the basic idea. Figure your throttle will be a cable with some kind of lever (brake lever?) that you squeeze.

What about a brake?

I'm going out on a limb...
Why not a scrub brake... Foot actuated...
But I do think you should have a a handle bar.. Even If it doesn't "steer"... The trucks steer with bias weight.. That just allows you to some what control the board. Keeping the front down under excelleration...

I like your new word. I'm going to steal it. Excelleration, noun. Excellence in acceleration?

The brake for this powered skateboard can be the combined sprocket/brake drum type attached to the drive wheel.

Thanks for the drawing and all the ideas, I've decided I'm gonna use a bicycle brake lever for a throttle, I'm gonna skip the brakes for now (safety third!) and now all I need is a way to attach an axle with a wheel on it to a piece of wood. The design in the drawing looks like it would work really well, but I don't know how to work with metal and I'm really don't want to scrap the work I've already done (I'm pretty lazy)

I don't know if the pictures posted or not, I'm going to try again.

I've been looking around and I've decided I'm going to use a fixed axle design, now my only problem is finding the parts, I can't seem to find anything online as all the websites that pop up seem to only have live axles, any ideas?

I've decided on either clamping the mini bike rear axle to the wood with some sort of hardware store black magic or lopping of the front fork of a kids bike and rednecking it together with duct tape, bubble gum and woodscrews with a good about of hope to hold it all together. Wish me luck!

And i thought my project was unsafe! check out my junk build Trike! same idea but motor on front wheel direct drive. I have a welder though. so mine is probably going to hold together longer?

So yours will look like this in the end? Hopefully?
