Whelp, I finally bit the bullet and purchased a land and sea dynamometer. It is bored out to accept 1", and ill use an adapter for 3/4"

I'm posting this so I don't get buyers remorse. So please, give me some reasons why this wasn't a bad idea hahaha!

run all my smallengines on the dayno WOOOT!!
recreate the briggs 5 hp post here http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1118 but with the predator 212, as well as the predator 420, maybe others.

Anyway, that will be all.

Well considering FHB isn't on here much anymore, it'll be nice to have another member with a better dyno. Maybe then we can see what mods can produce the most power vs stock. How portable is it? You could bring it to the next GPS get together and people could test out engines.

I'd love to see what you can really get out of a 212.. I suspect less than buying a new engine though... at $400 for the everything tuner kit you could buy a 420 engine for less, so.... unless you really need that extra 30lbs of weight savings for something..

It’ll be easier to get my engines to Indiana than to Texas for testing and tuning. LOL

I just got the basic one the kart dyno from dyno-mite (land and sea).

I got the high torque one so it can test up to 60 hp

The arbor was 3/4” so they are machining it to 1” with 1/4” jetway so I can put an adapter in and run either 3/4” or 1” shaft engines. Still waiting for them to send it even though I purchased on the 21st

I looked around. Is it a water brake? That seems to be the one I saw for karting.

Here's a quick intro into the dyno, if anybody else is also interested...

The DYNOmite’s absorber is actually a very inefficient centrifugal water pump – with a variable flow control. The more water provided to the absorber, the more power this pump requires. It acts as a brake on the crankshaft. The resultant absorber housing’s torque and engine RPM are monitored by computer. During a test, the dyno operator regulates the engine’s RPM by adjusting supply water via the absorber’s “load control valve” – to slowly sweep it through the desired range. The DYNOmite calculates horsepower via the standard formula: Hp = Torque (in foot pounds) x RPM / 5,252.

I got the dyno in the mail today. With the 20 lb users 'manual'. The dyno itself is modular (you can add stuff/sensors later. Im really impressed with the dyno itself, but not so much with the 'kit' that i was sold. I swear this data harness that I looked at is a SCSI adapter, and it has serial connectors too. Too funny! AHHH brings back memories of the 90's. Im not seeing any USB connecting ports on it either. I gotta do some fab work as well before i can even do a dyno run on it. Ive got a bunch to do that doesnt involve the dyno for the next 2 weeks, but all i wanna do is play with my dyno!

yeah i got through the 2" thick users manual. got to turn on the computer thing. Havent messed with the software. Got dennis to cut a key, but the 3/4" to 1" adapter was crap, so ordered a different one and will get the new key cut.

The dyno requires me to make a stand, so i got 2x casters and some heavy duty rubber absorbers for generators for the front, so i can wheel it around on two wheels, and lock the wheels and set it down on the isolators. I will maybe put a mini bike handlebar on the front for the little handheld computer to strap to, load control valve, throttle, and kill switch.

So what i plan on doing is cutting two more motor mount holes on the motor mount i have so i can fit anywhere from the 5 hp flathead up to the 35 hp v-twin vanguard. The engine mount will be welded to some 14 ga tubing i have lying around. The dyno torque arm support will have either 5/16 or 3/8" threaded rod that allows a 1" vibration isolator to hold the arm in place. Ive got too much going on, but am making it happen with what little time i have.

I have been messing with a mini bike today, and working too much, have worked most Saturdays this past month, and am at about 50% travel since the beginning of the year. Should come together pretty quickly though when i buckle down and build it.

Update:

I spent this weekend TIG welding the test stand for the dyno. So far so good. It is very therapeutic for me to TIG weld. It takes a lot longer, but I enjoy making beautiful welds.

I also purchased a wideband oxygen sensor. I will have to wire it into the wiring harness if i want it to log data along with the dyno data, but for now Im leaving it as is.

There is an interference fit between the rubber 'vibration absorbers' on the arm of the dyno, so i may either leave as is, or sand down so there isnt a potential source of error there.

Also, I plan on adding a mini-bike handlebar to mount all the controls Left hand is the water/load adjustment, right hand is throttle, and center is the small computer that comes with the dyno and the oxygen sensor.

Next I need to build the battery box, and wire up everything. I am excited that I finally have everything coming together.
