Greetings,

I bought my son a Razor Dune Buggy for Christmas and I was immediately jealous of him. I never had a go-kart as a kid and I always wanted one! I didn't want him having ALL the fun, so I decided to get something for myself.

I shopped around on Craigslist, found a Manco Black Fox that I thought was a good deal and I bought it. It's hilarious just how excited I was about this purchase. I couldn't wait until Christmas morning to go ride it.
I had to keep it hidden and covered in the garage for a couple of months and it was a difficult wait.

Well Christmas came and we opened up our presents and we all were very excited. My son and I rode our new toys and had a blast! I haven't had that much fun in a long time. Huge grin on my face the whole time.

The reason for this long thread is I broke my new toy and need help fixing it. The problem is that I am completely ignorant with mechanical issues. I am going to describe what it's doing, but if it sounds like I have no clue what I am talking about, it's because I have absolutely no clue what I am talking about.

Anyways, today while riding I noticed that the throttle would stick or the engine would rev a little higher at random idle times. I would notice this mainly while turning around or taking tight corners at very slow speeds. We have a couple of wooded acres with some trails that we were riding on and I would often get stuck in too tight of a corner and have to push it backwards. It seemed like the kart would fight me when I would do this. I got stopped by a tree in another tight corner and was trying to back it up when all of a sudden the engine died. I had a real hard time backing it up, like the back wheels were locked. I straightened it out, restarted it and the thing took off on me! I was playing tug-of-war with my go-kart and losing! Luckily the engine died again. It's almost like if something is preventing the drive shaft from turning, then the engine dies and the wheels lock up.

Right now it's in the garage after a dragged it in there. I can't try to start it because it just takes off on me. If I block the front to prevent it from going forward and start it, the engine fights for a bit and then dies. Like I said, I'm an idiot when it comes to working on anything mechanical, but I want to learn and I want to fix this thing! I love it and want to get back on the trails. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cutlass92 Thanks for the reply. I watched the video and I'll need to purchase a few items in order to clean the torque converter.

chancer I already want to upgrade my son's Razor dune buggy. I better get mine rolling first.

You said that whenever you were pushing or pulling your kart backwords the wheels would get like locked right. Well I had that same problem it turns out that my sprocket was to close to the driven unit(the big thing that the belt is on, not the one on the engine the other one.) The chain was hitting it and getting jammed so I just moved the sprocket over. Try that and check that.

Make sure that that bolt is not thight nor to loose. Its gotta be just right so the lever can easily be pushed to full throttle and when let go it comes back to Idle.

Jason1213 and Denny thank you for the replies. I really do appreciate everyone's input. I will check these things tonight and I also plan on cleaning the torque converter like cutlass92 suggested.

Further Troubleshoot...Possible Belt Issue?

I did some further troubleshooting and came across some areas of concern. I also spent some time researching here and learned some things. Several people are having issues with the clutch engaging at idle, which I believe is my problem. Solutions commonly suggested are ensuring the belt is installed correctly and verifying the correct belt is being used.

One area of concern is the bronze bushing or brass bushing on the driver pulley. There is a gap between the inner and outer sides of this pulley. The bushing does not cover this entire area and I don't know if that is an issue. I would think that this should be flush and was wondering if maybe my belt is too wide for this TC? I am including a photo of this gap for help.

As far as the TC and the belt go, first off I researched torque converters. I believe I have a 30 series comet which requires an asymmetrical belt that needs to be installed a certain direction. I checked mine and it is at least installed correctly, but I am not sure if this belt is the right one for this TC. The numbers on the outside of the belt mean nothing to me and a google search turned nothing up. Anyone familiar with this belt? As far as the condition of the TC, it does not appear overly dirty. I plan on cleaning it, but I don't have a grinder and am not looking forward to scrubbing this with a wire brush.

I also lifted the back end up and started the engine. The clutch immediately engaged and both back wheels began turning with some force. I gave it some throttle at the engine side and the spring is bringing it back to idle fine. I applied the brakes and I could get the wheels to stop spinning, but they still wanted to and when I released the brake, it took off again.
