I'm going to start by saying I know absolutely zero about brakes and today I got the hydraulic brakes for my go kart. Now me being me I had to test them out and first thing I did was push in on the master cylinder and close the brake. After doing that a couple times it doesn't open back up. Obviously a very newbie and stupid question but what am I missing? I've heard the term "bleeding brakes" before. Is that something I need to do?

Thanks for helping me out

Bleeding the brakes gets all the air out of the lines and fills it with brake fluid. Unless your brakes came prefilled and bled you'll have to bleed them. Did it come with a bottle of brake fluid? Prob 4-5 oz?

If it was filled, it was probably bled. Was the master already plumbed to the caliper?

Not sure. Kinda sounds like it vacuum sealed. BTW I'm just making this stuff up. These aren't actual things that I know of happening. But it's like the suction is too strong for the cylinder to open. I think if you opened a bleeder screw it may open. Again..... I'm making this stuff up in my head as I picture it and think about it so do it at your own risk. I can't explain what I mean but I can picture it in my head

Under "normal operating conditions", the only thing that prevents the brake pads from closing in on each other is the brake disc & its movement; since activating the master is like pushing the brake pedal, you, effectively, applied the brakes numerous times without the disc holding the pads apart; what you need to do now is reopen the pads by prying them apart &, in turn, pushing the caliper piston back...

In most cases, the only way to do this is to open the bleed nipple on the caliper to release the excess pressure/fluid, as the master cylinder will, most likely, have a non return valve, preventing the excess fluid from returning to the reservoir...

In short, yes, you need to "bleed" the brakes:
- open the bleed nipple
- pry apart the pads until the piston is seated as far back as it can go
- close the bleed nipple while holding pressure on the pads (to prevent air entering the caliper)
- fill the master cylinder fluid reservoir to the recommended level...

Great words of wisdom fabroman  I wont be pumping my maa... lol had to stop myself. I started to chuckle. I've got a dirty mind and severely lacking sleep. Anyhow I wont do what the op did but it's sound advice incase somehow when I get my hydraulic brakes they end up closed. I probably woulda tried that way anyway but step by step instructions help. Guess there's no fitting a good ol "C" clamp in there to comprrss the piston on a car caliper huh? This nice weather we've been having I cant wait until my build is done
