Our kart is geared the other way around, so the electric motor is overspun, not the gas engine. The idea behind our kart is that we use the electric motor to get up to speed, then switch to the gas engine to propel us faster. In our case the gas engine is never overrevved. For your kart, you should probably gear them so that 100% throttle on each is about the same rpm on the axle, that way you don't have the engine pulling you back when you accelerate with the motor. What battery are you looking to use for that anyway?

The hybrid integration is a lot harder than we originally thought...we were able to mount two servos on the engine; one for throttle and one for gas, with both being controller by an Arduino. The Arduino also has a DAC to control the electric motor and a bunch of relays to control the gas engine starter and kill switch. So far, we have only been able to drive the kart using both powertrains at the same time when we had two separate controls, the pedal for electric and a cable for the engine. The battery we ended up going with is a 3p14s molicel p42a with a 60A bms. We shunt modded the controller and now pull about 45a at ~54v which adds up to around 2400w. The gas engine is definitely faster, but has a lot less torque compared to the electric motor.

When starting from a full stop, with both powertrains at full throttle, the kart accelerates very very well and reaches a speed of 30km/h in a few seconds.

The plan for the future is to add regen braking + speedometer dashboard.

For the electric drivetrain, i was planning on using the mentioned KR5V, a Fardriver controller (i have a 72450 & a 96850 on hand) and i have multiple battery choices but for 72v I have a 72v 24ah battery that i run at 150a line 450 phase. Or i can use my 72v 15ah 80a battery (or both I have a 150a battery blender too). I'm toying with the idea of buying a QS168 and just full electric swapping it, but i really like the 125cc's range. I really have no idea how i want to integrate it yet

Honestly after looking into it, I think the best way to achive my goal is to fully swap to an electric powertrain, and add a gas range extender to it as well. I think it would be much more simple that my initial plan and would allow me to get the range I desire. Now I just have to learn about how all of that works and it should be easy 😅
