Hi all,
I am looking for help with an upgrade. I have built a kart. Some pics attached. I need an upgrade for more power (go figure) and a better controller. The kart goes thru mud on my hunting property carrying 200 lbs work of cargo and dragging materials at walking speed. Its geared so full 3600 rpm is about 4mph. The motor I am running now is a 1kW MY1020 brushed and a $30 controller. I keep destroying the controllers. The contacts on the relay weld shut and I lose reverse. I took the controllers apart and found the relays are rated 20 amps NC and 30 amps NO. The kart paddles thru the mud. I can see its pulling upper 20's for amps when its doing it. The mud is in patches. At this point I figure that the motor has been overheated exceeding duty cycle and the controllers are not sufficient either.
I would not mind spending more money on a better built motor and controller or over sizing things so they run cooler when I'm pushing hard.
I have looked for a better motor but having a hard time of it. The 2kW range doesn't seem to have much for good motors. Without any better ideas, I am thinking I will get an 1800w 48v Boma brushless motor and a Kelly KLS6018N. Perhaps the 60v 2kW Boma would be better. I am running 4 marine 90amp hour batteries. I don't think I have room for a 5th battery, but I could change to 60v when those batteries life is up. I bought them last year. Kelly has other controllers that fit my range. Trapazoidal brushless and another sinusoidal KLS-S. Seems like durability and efficiency would go to the KLS-N since the fets are mounted to aluminum and its sinusoidal.
I think with the Boma motor I would need to get temp sensors from Kelly, but would have to guess at the temperature they could run at. I could limit the amperage to 30 amps continuous. 30amps * 50 volts = 1500 watts.
Are there any other motor choices anyone knows of?
Do the Kelly sinusoidal controllers work well with the Boma motors? Does anyone have another controller that may be a better fit?
