Huge Motor Can I do anything with this? 90 Volts!!!

Pick this up at a yard sale for $5. I know nothing about electric motors at all. So I thought I would post this here before I go any further.

Can this be used on a kart at all? Here are some pics. 90 Volts DC 1hp 3450 RPM's.

Again bare with me. I have no clue when it comes to this stuff.

Its a treadmill motor. You can get the controllers on ebay for them. I don't know how well it could be used in a kart, but they work really well for variable speed drill presses, mills, lathes, routers, all sorts of power tools.

Are you sure? From looking on ebay. I am pretty sure it's an industrial motor of some type. But then again what do I know right? I would never thought it was a treadmill.

Would it make a good buffing wheel? Or to slow or to fast? Enough power?

Well I'm assuming you're going to run it at 120, which it should do so fine. RPM's increase pretty porportionally with voltage.

It'll be plenty of power.

Thats just it. I do not fully understand AC and DC.

At this point. I am looking for a buffing wheel. Or just ebay it. I need a wheel that has mass power for polishing and buffing parts.

No, that is a DC 90v motor. You would need an AC to DC speed controller to power it for a buffing wheel. Most likely came from a treadmill.
Some treadmills have AC, DC and AC 3ph motors.
If anything you might be able to sell it to some one who needs it and with that u might be able to buy a AC 120v 3450rpm motor for your buffer.
So not all loss. good find none the less.

Mr. Edison's Direct Current (DC) is what comes out of a battery. One lead is always negative, the other always positive.

Mr. Tesla's Alternating Current (AC) is what runs through power lines and comes out your wall sockets. For 120v, one wire alternates negative and positive, the other is always negative.

To supply enough voltage for that motor, you would need 8, 12v batteries wired in series(meaning negative of one battery to positive of another and so on).

You can get the controllers on ebay for around $50, they take 115volts AC in and out put 90VDC. Then you can hook up a pot to it really easily and make your self a very nice variable speed buffer.

You don't want one like that because you would still need an AC to DC power supply, and it would give you near the power that the motor is capable of. The second one is more like it but you have to have a 240VAC plug. I would suggest something like this:

120VAC in and 130VDC out. I know thats more that what you need. There are some other ones on ebay that are 90V. You need a 5k pot, and a nob. Probably some sort of box for it. But this would do the trick.

i got a motor kind of like this one out of a sump pump for free. im thinking DIY lathe.

The motor is worth more than the scrap value of the copper + your time for unwinding/stripping the armature, which is pretty darn hard. Its meant not to come undone.

The sump pump motor might work but depending on the pump motor the shaft might have a tapered end or too small of a shaft to mount a common pulley.

ya its a D bore. so i have to find a pulley that either fits on the coupler shaft and i weld it there, or i measure the shaft and google it...

i think you should throw it in a minibike. if you can get the batteries to fit. You would need 7, 12 volt batteries. and 1 6 volt battery to get the 90 volts you need. Since its only around 1 hp you can probably get away with using it for a minibike. Itd be cool to see and that way you can learn a little more about electrics.

maybe even follow in Tmans steps and make an electric reverse trike.....
