How would you approach setting up brakes on a kart with a differential?

Well it's considerably later than "tomorrow" (oops), but here's the diff...

I've identified the kart as a 2002 Carter 2766TX: http://kartingdistributors.com/pdfs/carterpdfs/2766-3016.pdf

It needs a lot of work. The first order of business (besides just scraping and repainting, which I'm working on right now while a friend takes a look at the engine) is unsticking a rod that has seized up in two little cylinders that are supposed to allow it to rotate:

And figuring out where to get another one of these,

because the left side is missing one.

Also on the to-do list is cleaning up and greasing the rusty torque converter, attaching the brake pedal that seems to be off of a different kart, figuring out what to do about the leaky tubeless tires, rebuilding the damaged, rainwater-flooded engine or picking up a new one, putting everything back together, and giving it a test drive :)

KartNoob,

I've got the same diff on my yard kart, it is a discontinued Comet kart differential. Makes a lot of difference in the handling. I've got a disc brake on diff input like some others have suggested, but Machinist@large is correct, if one wheel loses traction you have no brakes at all. Mine works for me, because I have discs on both front wheels in addition to the single on the back. I used motorcycle parts for my brakes so they are kind of overkill but the kart has a KE175 motor with a 5 speed transmission, so I can get going fast enought to need the big brakes.

Ace, the next time someone accuses me of having a wild hair up the :censored: ,all I need to do is show them photos of your kart.

How soon do I get to ride it?!?!? :thumbsup:

As for braking, a huge "Thank You!!!!!!" For confirming what I've been trying to get across..... :cheers2:

Yes Pat, I don't understand why you were being questioned about the one brake on the differential and the effects of using only one brake on a differential, you are absolutely 100% correct. I would have stuck up for you but this is the first time I looked over this thread.

Since I was the only one "arguing" FOR a single disc in this thread..

I feel the need to -again- point out that
A) I never accused you of anything Pat... I just pointed out that I can't think of a situation that makes it absolutely necessary to have two discs

and
B) I always agreed that in any case two discs are safer.

The only thing I did say was.. that for me personally (and at least one kart maker) a single disc seems safe enough.

Oh, and -just because-
I thought we talk about a 6.5hp 3600rpm TC'd suspended heavy two seater ...
comparing that to a 16hp 7000rpm five speed unsuspended lightweight (I dare to say RACE) kart
is a bit of a stretch IMHO.

At least when it comes to the question which one is capable of braking the traction:D

Anywhoo;
as kartnoob already pointed out, the single disc is not an option anymore (not enough room)
So why argue at all?

No need to apologize Bret,
as far as I'm concerned we're good :D
we're all actually (at least from my side)
It's just Pat's metaphor that tickled my "you need to answer to that thread"-nerve again;
and I wanted to be clear about that ;)

Nothing more;
no offense taken, no offense intended.. all good :cheers2:

No need to Pat, as I said no offense taken!
I just wanted to be clear that I didn't meant to offend (or sound like a douche) either,
just because I couldn't wrap my head around your experience.

typed words are more difficult to decipher when it comes down to the mood level..
And as far as I'm concerned everything's good; we are good.

A misused word had Doug banned last week, and he's native...
So I was just not too confident about how my previous posts came across;
I mean..in the end I'm not; so I definitely could have mispicked a word myself.

:cheers2:

PS Now I have the feeling I actually made it worse... weird :(
