How to remove Honda GX140 Governor?

Hello, this is my first post. I've been looking for info on Honda GX140 Governor removal. Can I accomplish this without taking off the valve cover to remove the governor arm? And is there an easy way or trick to remove the governor arm? The reason being is I don't want to adjust valve lash, replace the gasket, adjust timing and so on. Is there an incredibly simple way to do this or am I just dreaming. I have all the neccessary tools to do this btw. Thanks.

Governor removal on the GX140 is the same as that on all the other small block GX's and clones. You WILL have to open up the side cover of the engine, you will NOT have to alter timing, valve lash etc. Have a read here, too- http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16518

Nothing governor related is under the valve cover. Do not simply defeat the governor externally. Take it all out, or leave it all alone.

Thanks for the great info. I'll adjust the governor first to get more rpm before getting all technical.

I've looked at that. They want you to adjust valve lash & take off the valve lifters etc. I just don't want to do that.

The way i had done it on my clone (gx200 clone) is to remove the recoil housing and fan shroud, remove the flywheel, and to the right above the crankshaft you will see the small pin that holds the governor gear, i then put a center punch on it and knocked it into the case. I then opened the motor, removed the governor peices, and plugged the hole with a with a self tapping grub screw (not sure of the size any longer), i then cut the shaft of the governor lever that comes out of the engine as i was removing it because i had a different throttle setup and plugged it with a 1/4 inch bolt, then bolted the engine back together at proper specs (torque wrench advised).

The primary reasons that articles suggests adjusting valve lash (although I don't completely agree with what's written) are due to the suggestion that you may be removing or altering the valve train, and/or upgrading other parts at the same time. A simple governor-ectomy does not require you to reset valve lash, as the valvetrain is not altered in the process.

That said, it's never a bad idea (if you have the means) to doublecheck that your junk is within spec...

All great stuff. I'll remove it once I run some carb cleaner through the old engine & get it running. All posts are much appreciated:thumbsup:
