When using racekart slicks, you can choose to either match the tires tread width to the rims width, or select a rim that is as much as 2 full inches wider or narrower.

(the only drawback to using a radically narrower rim would be the treads profile would be more rounded instead of perfectly flat)

Below is pics of my 2 karts, they both have the exact same Burris model 11"x8.10"-6' tires on the R/R.

This first kart has a 8" wide R/R rim:

My oval-racer kart below has the same exact R/R tire, only its just mounted on a 10" wide rim...
(the L/R on this kart is a 11'x600-6' mounted on an 8" wide rim)

Its very common for kart racers to experiment using different rim widths, both to alter their tires circumference/stagger and to change the tires handling characteristics. Using a wider rim will stiffen up a tires sidewall and lower its circumference.

I've mounted/inflated race slicks on rims the same width as the tire. Its pretty easy especially with brand new tires and rims, but you might need to use a ratcheting tie-down strap around the center of the tire to help inflate and get the bead to pop on yours. (spraying windex on the tires bead area helps with mounting and getting the bead to pop too...)

But I dont have a tire bander (like my pic below) that are typically needed when using rims 2" wider than the tire. So I've always just had those installed/inflated at my kart shop.

Those tire banders also help keep the tire from growing/retaining a slightly larger diameter when the bead finally pops/seals at the super high air pressure levels needed. (sometimes it takes as much as 80-100lbs. to get the bead to pop/seal)

On my oval racer, the mounted-tire circumference is very critical because we want a different/specific stagger for each of the 4 tires on the kart. This stagger technique is just done so the kart will end up turning left much better on an oval track. We want our right side tires to be quite a bit taller than the lefts. We tune the stagger-levels to best match the corners of different tracks.

Staggering the tires is done with pretty much all forms of oval-racing vehicles, but this technique is not used when you will be wanting to turn both right and left equally well.

Yup no stagger, wasn't even considering it (street kart) lol.

So no redneck tire mounting? XD

Starter fluid an a match will seat the bead nicely if you manage to keep your eye brows.

Cool, I kinda figured you wouldnt stagger your tires, but I'd just kinda explained all that bit just in case you'd might try to mount rims that were 2" wider than your tires

Oh yeah, I've got a homemade/DIY bead breaker designed kinda like this one:

That's why you have 10. If you lose 1 or 2, there's still a considerable number left.

No fingers required. Bobbing for nachos sounds like fun to me!!!

Anderkart- did you design your own bead breaker, or follow plans? I ask because I'm going to take a whack at one sometime in the near future and I'm still shopping out ideas...

How would you seal the bead with the redneck method? Tire even on the rim, spray one side all around with carbcleaner/lighter fluid (spray some inside or no?), and light?
