I meant MAPP-Oxy.

I want longevity.. So if spending a tad more gets me cutting, heating, and welding capabilities, I would rather than, than just something that heats metal...

I have that little outfit and I must say, its not worth it. The $9 bottles of oxygen dont last long at all and its welding and cutting capabilities are severely limited because of its size. Its useless for cutting/welding anything thinker than about 12 or 14 ga.

Okay, thanks. Ill just get the propane torch, and a bottle of propane. I was only going to get it if it were good.. no sense in wasting money... If I need cutting, I have an angle grinder, if I need welding, Ill get an HF unit... BUT... I have no use for either at the moment..

Just high temp. and cold water. Get it cherry red and quench. I made a folding shovel in tech class and I heat tempered the blade this way. I also used Casine hardener. Get it cherry red and plunge it into a bucket of Casine. It's pure carbon and helps to case harden the metal. Paired with many heat quenchings, the metal was very tough.

I told you earlier the whole blade was not ruined, carfully grind it back 4mm or so from each blade and then sharpen, why re-heat treat the whole thing if only the tip is ruined,

If the bloody propane is $40 and the new set of chisels is $6, heck you could get your self a nice crowbar and a decent screw driver for under $40 while your at it!

Cheers, Cam.

The blow torch was was only $20....so I can grind them then treat them... instead of having to be careful every time, not to heat the metal...

I didnt get cherry, I got white... so Ill retry tommorrow...

i didnt feel like reading the whole thread, but i got to the part where everyone is talking about sharpening wood chisels with a grinder...

I would NEVER use a grinder to sharpen a wood chisel, a wet stone works much better and will give you a better edge. If your have chips, use a file to clean it up.

I wouldnt if they were expensive chisels... but for what I use em for... a grinder, then some hi-grit sand paper works well...

Chinese steel just doesn't heat temper like the good ole Pittsburgh steel. My school buys local. My kart is all Pittsburgh steel!
