I have a kill switch on the steering column. The switch does not work. I have tried connecting the wire to different spots on the motor, but can't get it to work. The engine starts no matter what position the switch is and it will not kill the motor. Any suggestions? Thanks

Dont worry, your not stupid, just uneducated. Your making an effort and asking questions, thats all thats important.

Knowing what engine you have helps but this parts of the engine is fairly generic.

Anyhow the coil is under the blower housing(the big sheetmetal guy the pull starter is on) a few bolts hold it onto the engine. The coil is the blocky looking thing next to the flywheel with a fat wire running to the sparkplug there will be a hookup for a wire on the coil, grounding this hookup shuts down the coil.

This is assuming the engine is newer than the mid 80s older engines use points ignition, give me some pictures with the blower off and I can tell you what you have.

The engine I have is a Tecumseh power sport 6hp. The wire from the kill switch was previoulsy wired to bolt underneath where the throttle cable is attached to the motor. Thanks
