Hi - I have an old briggs engine my neighbor gave me and plan on putting it on a old carter go kart frame I have. The TYPE and CODE #'s are gone from the motor. My main question is if it has points or electronic ignition? And also I may need a carb kit - what # carb?

-Thanks in advance, AL

I would guess it's around 1970's vintage in which case, it'll have points ignition. If you want to know for certain, remove the flywheel & look for yourself; if it's points, there will be a small cover around the shaft which covers the points

I'm thinking early '70's, too. Paint aside, I don't believe the recoil and shroud are original. Pop the flywheel off- if there's a small removable aluminum cover under there, you've got a breaker points ignition. I bet you do.

Yes, you did. Just reinforcing your comments.

DOCTOR- "Fine. If you don't move out of your mother's basement, you'll die a virgin, too!"

:wai: I agree not the original shroud. An I very much suspect that is not an I/C engine. I think that is not a points engine. because of the non slide choke carb. But like is stated pull the shroud and flywheel and check.

carb/tank look 80's or later, head looks mid 70's (spark plug location), not an I/C.

My guess is that it's a cool bore that's been rebuilt a couple times. Still a great engine for a kart.

Pull off the shroud and snap a pic of the flywheel and coil, also if there is a black wire running off the coil to behind the flywheel you can bet it's got points still.
