I had to replace the bar on a chainsaw, a Stihl, and I had never seen its stating mechanism before and didn't have time to take a look to see how it works.

You pull the pull cord wait a second-half a second and it turns over, a sort of delayed reaction.

Anyone sure on how this works, If I had the time I would have tore into it to see whats what.

Thanks

Yep, the spring has a sprag in it that releases when it gets to a certain point in tension, once it hits that preset tension, it releases and spins the motor over. For the Stihl's, its called the EZ Start, mainly used for little old ladies or people with bad shoulders (like me) to make them start. It is a little strange to have one start like that though, also, make sure that there is NO tension on the recoil, otherwise the chainsaw might just start up on its own... Been there, had it happen, NOT fun...
