I am totally new to this whole thing, and I want to start building a kart. From what I have seen, people start by making models on some computer software. What program is it? Is it a google sketchup type of thing?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

Some people use free programs like Sketchup, others like myself use advanced 3D design programs like Autodesk Inventor(I get a free student version). What type of kart are you planning on building? For a simple "ladder frame" kart, a paper drawing will suffice; 3D design would just be overkill.

google sketchup is great for free, but i find alot of glitches and stuff that get me pissed off.

i use autodesk inventor 2011 at school and since im used to it now i find it alot better. but at first it seemed so complicated.

google sketchup is free, and okay for that thought it is much better for buildings, or less intricate designs. a pen and ruler will do fine for some thing, but just try downloading sketchup and play with it. its better than it seems at first. also most other apps that people in this forum like auto-cad etc. can cost upwards of $1,000

I have no clue... whatever is easiest for a beginner. One seat, and relatively fast. Easy to build. It all seems so complicated.

So then all you really need is a paper drawing. Spend some time looking around the site and do lots of research.

Echoing what's already been said, look around this (and other) kart sites before you even draw a picture. Decide what you want your kart to do - is it for playing in the dirt, or will it run asphalt as well? Will it turn left to go fast, or are twisties in it's future? Off road and trail? Single wheel drive or live axle? Scrub brakes, band brake, or disc? There are lots of options.
Once you decide what you want your kart to do, see if you can websearch and find one already built and copy it the best you can.
Most people are very helpful, if you can actually contact whoever made the kart you're using as an example you may get the specs you need the easy way. If not, don't forget that "Back in the day", many a winning race car started life as a paper drawing and was constructed using chalk lines on a garage floor.
Once you get your basic measurements just pay attention to detail and you'll be find.
If you get stuck, just ask - chances are whatever problem you have someone here has already found the answer to!
