I am researching on the comet system and wanted to know if the old one is worth rebuilding or get a new one
any suggestions?

If there is no serious damge to the TC, then all I would do is refurbish the old one. They are pretty bullet proof and generally all you need to replace are belts, springs etc. If the sheeve faces are really pitted with rust, then you might want to get a new one.

Looking at the first photo I would say that the belt position in the driven isn't due to belt length because the belt has a ton of slack. If the driven had some sort of binding to limit the moveable sheave from closing then that could keep it from running the belt up to the top. It seems likely that the op simply moved the belt while yankin and bangin.
