Really need to see what you are working with.As the title says, how do I know?
Is there a way to tell without pulling the engine or opening it up?
It has electric start, its a Honda Clone possibly a Lifan.
Get the needed battery and take a volt meter and read what the volts are then Hook up the battery and start it. Then hook up a voltmeter to the battery while motor is running and if you get a reading higher than it was to start with you have charge.

Don't take me the wrong way Axx3d. But this will tell him if his engine is setup or has electric start on it ? Should be able to tell by looking I would think. Maybe not though.

Older model "lifan red" 6.5hp electric start hence why its not fully shown on lifans site
if at first you dont succeed get a bigger hammer....
Actually no need to get a battery to see if one would get charged...
Since the engine HAS electric start, it'll have Battery terminals..
Hook up a voltmeter to those and start the engine, if at mid rpm (anything that's resonably higher than idle) the voltmeter reads roughly 13 Volts there is a charging coil installed.

In that case Axx3d is right. Sorry
