I recently restored (painted and touched up the engine) a go kart that i bought a few months ago. It contains a live axle with a drum brake system. They work but barely and you have to push the pedal down all the way possible to engage the brake. I am familiar with the mechanics of a drum brake and have come to the conclusion that it needs new brake shoes. The only part i am having an issue with is getting the drum off to see inside and replace the shoes. There are 3 bolts sticking out the end toward the tire that are connected ti the stationary part of the drum, and there is one allen key hole that is on the part the moves with the axle. I dont even know where to start. There is a welded plate on the side of the frame that i dont see coming off anytime soon. I have a few pics of it but wont be able to take any better or more detailed ones until the morning. Thanks for the help. (The pics are just of the cart in general to give an idea of what it looks like)

Heyyy, looks like an Azusa kart! ==> https://azusaparts.com/product-category/kits/go-kart-kits/

The Azusa kart comes as a kit, not completed or ready to run. Assuming your kart has the parts Azusa recommends, they all use the #2552 "Brake Assembly 6" with plated Drum Riveted to 1" ID Uni-Hub with Set Screw & 1/4" Keyway plus Spacer & Hardware"

I'm not pretending I know how to disassemble and reassemble the drum, but there is an exploded parts illustration at the following link and you can try contacting them for instructions. #2552 brake drum kit: https://azusaeng.com/product/azusa-6-drum-brakes-brake-drums/

They have email but that takes time. Don't forget to try their phone number and remember they're in California: 626-967-4160

I just downloaded their digital catalog and browsed it....:drool5:

This might shed some light on it. It's a build presentation: https://affordablegokarts.com/pages/azusa-fun-kart-build-up

I bet there's hundreds of builds out there in cyberspace.
Good information Hellion. Interesting that they seem to use components similar to the old Carter karts. The pedals are similar, the throttle rod & spring are similar as are the "wrap-around" bands that secure the seat to the frame. I just finished a Carter 1200 Series kart where the roll cage had those "wrap around" bands to secure it to the frame.
