How big of an engine

I need to know what you guys suggest for and engine on my first kart project it will be an offroad kart used on trails and hill climbs so i need alot of power and want a decent top end
50mph?. i wanted a dirt bike engine but i don't think i can swing one i could buy an off brand 110cc brand new but even geared down not sure if that is enough what do yo guys think. my other option is to use about a 18hp horizontal shaft engine from a mower and either do a variable speed belt drive or chain drive with clutch.

sounds like u need a sled engine or a 2 stroke dirt bike engine. U could try that 18hp engine and a toque converter too

like i said thats what i want to do but not sure if i can afford it would a large horiz. shaft engine not work almost as good?

its just that the 2 stokes keep u rpms with out clutch slippage and jump rpms under just about any condition. 4 strokes are not very good until they get going once they get going they are badass

The bike motor (any type) will be 100x better than an industrial engine of the same capacity (cc's).

The horiz. engine will be alright, but not almost as good as a bike engine.

bs. The 2-stroke's have much less torque at low revs. 4-strokes are better at low revs. Don't know what you're talking about clutch slippage for.

on most 2 strokes it has a trasmition that doesnt use a centificul clutch witch means there is no slippage. from my experience 2 strokes seem much more powerful than 4 strokes IMO

4 stroke bike engines use the same transmission type as 2 strokes for the most part. 2 strokes generally have a better weight to power ratio, but less torque.

That's my buggy, it has a 200 cc honda trike engine (one heavy sucker to) in it. There are several using 13 hp clones.
