This is a brand new engine, wasn't ran for more than a couple seconds, as soon as i heard this noise i shut it off. The pull start also had a "notchy" feel, that's the best i can describe it, it wasn't smooth, you can kind of hear what im talking about when i pull. This video was taken earlier today and since then I've broken in the engine a bit and it seems fine, good power and everything. It is still louder than i think it should be, and you can still hear that car starter/electrical cranking kind of sound be it a lot less noticable. This is my first small engine so it could be normal i dont know. Thank you for helping out a noob

Unbolt. Take back to store, trade it for another.
Drain gas and oil first.

ETA; I just listened to it again, is that the clutch making that noise?

That might be the worst sound ever.
I have never heard a sound like that.
I don't think it is normal.

The next thing to do would be to remove the pull start housing, take a pic or two of the inside of it, and also try to start the engine with a rope and see what happens.
If you're unable to return the engine, you might have to fix or replace the starting mechanism.

the 'ding' at the end is surely the clutch bell..

the rest is odd though.. sounds like a e-starter not disengaging.
Since this engine doesn't appear to have electric start you see me baffled.

Wait?? No pops?
could it be your magneto rattled loose and rubbs against the flywheel?

I'd go one step further as what Joe suggested:
remove not only the starter housing, but also remove the shroud,
see what's going on and maybe post a pic.

PS the other idea I have has something to do with insufficient oil levels and a now worn cylinder wall/piston rings... so let's hope it's not that :D

Thank you all for your input. I did remove the pull start and everything looks normal, but again im new to small engines so i definitely could be wrong. I just drove it around and it seems to work fine, it does sound like its idling really high though.

Yeah, that sounds just fine.

Just keep running it like that until something flies apart.

Sounds like something rubbing against something else that's rotating.

If take the shroud off and rotate the flywheel by hand. See if you hear any scraping. While it's off, pull the rope itself and see if it makes any noises. The only sound I've heard from that is when my old Briggs pull start thing is going out. You know, the little thing that keeps the flywheel on, with the bearings.

But my guess is the pull start not disengaging. Sounds plasticy.

Just took off the pull start again and found what the problem was. The bottom of the metal cover was bent in a good amount, causing the plastic fins to hit it, thus the plasticy starter noise. Now my question is would the damaged fins effect the performance in any way? I do have a warranty but would rather not go through the hassle and wait since its an online only item if not necessary.

yupp, bend back the shroud, clean the fins a bit
just remove what can be removed easily with your fingers,
then hit the affected fan blade zones with the flame of your lighter (ever so lightly!)
to smooth the edges and you'll be good.

PS looks like a self made issue... asking for replacement because you dented the shroud is not a decent way of doing business, is it?
