 I second the Mini Tach. That what is use on my GX160 Honda and my K-series Kohlers. With most analog tach's you have to use battery powered igntion.

Nope. Follow the directions and you can set it for 1cyl operation.
Could you elaborate on the directions, please? From their description it wouldn't work on a single cylinder...
This tachometers measures the time between reflected pulses of light and calculates the RPM
...
can be calibrated to work with 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines as well as outboards. It includes two installation options, including hardware and inductive pickup for installation on vehicles with conventional, electronic, and distributorless ignition systems.

I'm thinking that I'll get one of these, but want to confirm what modifications (if any) will need to be performed before I purchase.
I'm right there with you!

I don't remember what I set it to but I verified the numbers by the idle rpm and the clutch engagement rpm. It remembers what it was set to even after you remove the battery. If I remember correctly, I didn't get it set correctly the first try and it was reading twice the rpm's. Its been a while since I purchased it. And I can tell you that I paid alot more than what they are selling them for now.

I'm thinking we'd use option 3, inductive pickup on spark plug wire.

I'm liking it!

I bought one of the digital tachometers on ebay today for $10. I'm going to use that to see RPMs at first until I buy one of the nice analog tachometers down the road.
