regular analog tach, Livorsi makes some cool ones for diesels. Im not taking the governor out and the diesel tachs go to 4000 rpms so it's be perfect. Can it be done? If so what is needed and how?

In the first place, tachs designed for multi-cylinder engines generally don't work with a single-cylinder engine without electronic modification.

Secondly- I'm not even sure how diesel tachs work, but I DO know that gas engine tachs count spark pulses. There's no spark in a diesel. So- probably will not work.

I wondered about that too, cause i think a diesel tach runs from the efi computer system, which a clone certainly doesnt have. and thanks kartingizm, that looks to be a pretty easy set up as well.

I would think the diesel tach works on the pulse of the injector just a guess though,

Also not to thread jack but a side question would a tach for a 2 stroke work on a 4 I would think so but not sure

that link has a diesel tach that claims to: "Mini-Diesel Tach. A small inductive probe straps to the alternator"

Could the inductor be put on the coil wire?

I would say probably not, just like my question is basically because a 2 stroke would pulse every other stroke a 4 stroke is every 4.

So I am thinking to answer my own question probably could work but might be telling me I am doing 1k when really it is 2 and so on

To clarify- A two stroke fires once per crank revolution
- A four stroke fires once every two revolutions

Exception- waste-spark systems, four strokes that fire on the exhaust stroke- once per rev
Exception2-

Most of our "OPE"/"industrial" engines- the Briggs, Tecs, Honda/clones etc- DO fire once per crank rev due to the design of the ignition system- The magnet passes the coil on every rev... Therefore, any tach that works properly on one of our engines would also work on an equialent two-stroke... I think...:idea2:

thanks for clarifying it made since to my simple mind but you put it better

good point I knew that just didnt think about it some times it is the little stuff that you over look like on sling blade when they couldnt get the lawn mower started he gets it and says "there aint no gas in here"

Consensus seems to be that the options are:

* Mechanical-drive
* Electronic
- Modify an automotive multi-cylinder tach
- spend $100+ on a "Jr. Dragster" tach
- Modify a cdi-ignition tach (like on a snowmobile)

We ought to all put $5 into a pot, with the whole amount going to the first person who finds a straight-up bolt-on analog tach (ideally something like 0-6,000rpm) that's readily available for under $50.

You must modify a current tachometer or use a Jr. Dragster,

I modified a Super Tach II with a 625K resistor for my 1 cylinder engine to the kill switch.
The tach plus resistor is about $45 dollars and the Jr. Dragster is over $100. I would recommend the Super Tach, because the analog style looks nicer and is cheaper.

Dang, just found one for super cheap on ebay but its a 10k tachometer:
