homemade seat

I've seen seats for like $35 dollars, but I was wondering if anyone just made there own and would be willing to share their experience.

For my little mini bike I made a seat plate out of a 1inch piece of solid wood. I plan on just stuffing it with some filling, wrapping it with some cheap covering, and then some staples.

When making your seat it is very easy, we use 1/2" plywood at the least, cut it to fit. We round the edges out so they will not be sharp. Use foam. Small stores like joanne fabric or handcock fabric (there has to be a store near you). Just cut the foam to fit your purpose, wrap the fabric you can buy there and use a staple gun on the back.

If you have an old couch save the foam, foam is not cheap. You can cut that foam using an electric turkey carver, it works like butter and you can cut the design you need. (this was not my idea, giving props to Smee for the carver idea).

We have to do it all the time, just make sure you grasp it tight and make clean folds, stuffing seems like it will be strange looking.

A good tip I have heard for cutting foam nicely is an electric carving knife.

I have about a half inch board and I will have to hunt down some soft foam. After bouncing around the yard without a seat, anything will feel better.

Go to the thrift store and buy some big pillows for a dollar or two. Tons of stuffing in there. If you get the right size pillow, you may be able to squash it into the right shape without opening it up. Just cover it with vinyl and staple it under the bottom edge of the board.

You may even be able to find some good vinyl at the thrift store, attached to an ugly chair or something else cheap. I just made a seat last night from a piece cut out of a cheap vinyl pool cover that was left by the previous owners of our property. It's probably way too cheap and thin and will need replacing soon, but I'll try to find something better in the meantime.

You're building all this from scratch, and it's subject to change, right? You could always pull it apart and do it over if there's something you don't quite like the first time.

layered up carpet padding works well too. also much cheaper than thick foam if you were to buy it somewhere

I would get the fabric at Wal-mart - save $$$$ .
