Hey guys, So i started building a scrap chopper out of a old Honda sl350 frame I had layin around. Chopped the frame and cut and bent bars to hard tail it, then I got a 5hp Briggs, put a Tecumseh carb on it so I can run a gas tank. Anyways heres some photos of it so far.

Anyways though, my plan was to make a jack shaft with a belt coming from the engine to the jack shaft so I could have a tensioner that would act as a suicide clutch. I was planning on flipping the back wheel over so its being driven from the right side. Any body have any ideas for making a jack shaft? and How do I figure out the gear ratios needed for the 2 pulleys and the sprocket on the jack shaft.

This was kindof my idea for the clutch to do something like this.

Jackshafts? Use the search function. You could spend a whole day looking at them.

Hello and welcome... Interesting ride...
You should take a look at my thread on jackshaft building as I have good pics there and I am one of the few who have built a right side drive bike here on this forum...

That tensioner system isn't very good to work with as there was a thread a long while ago (here I think) that the original maker said he converted back to just a regular clutch..
Honestly I would just get a good clutch an go with that...

Since you have a large diameter rear wheel... You'll need at least 7:1 ratio.... But more likely about 8-9:1 with that smaller motor......

So I think I figured out how I am going to mount the jack shaft. I will make 2 plates that will weld on to the side of the rear motor mount on the frame. Both those plates will have a hole drilled in them for the bearing.

Oh.. now I can see on the PC... you will need to factor the chain type of the rear wheel count into the JS equation as per desired ratio numbers... or change the rear sprocket to the clutch chain pitch.....which will be difficult as they'll be some work mating the sprocket to the hub of the wheel....

So I made a little bit of progress, I stole 2 pulleys off a old tiller with a blown engine, also I stole the sprocket off the old motor. Also found some shaft i had laying around. Now I dont think i will have the proper gear ratio though with the 2 pulleys and the sprocket, im geussing I have to go bigger in the rear pulley.
