I built a 24" bending brake to use with my 25 ton hydraulic press this morning.
It's pretty simple, but very effective. The baseplate and moving jaw are 1"x4" cold rolled steel. Uprights are 1" bar stock, sleeves are 1" steel pipe. Top die is 1½"x¼" angle iron, and the bottom die is a piece of 2"x¼" angle nested in a piece of 3" channel. Return springs are just trampoline springs. I heated one turn in the middle and folded them in half.
Bends on ¼" plate come out at exactly 90°, and it takes about 15 tons per lineal foot of bend on 1/4". It would been small sections (less than a foot) of ⅜" with ease.
Not too shabby for being built entirely off my drops rack.
Paint job was just to keep it from rusting. Figured I might as well have fun with it.
Total cost: $0 plus about 4 hours of my time.
