I have a Yamaha 250 2 stroke off a dirtbike I got for free. Engine runs great and it had a 6speed transmission. I want to build a gokart. My grandpa has a riding mower that had a differential rear end and a front end we can use. I want to build a frame or get plans that I can use to help me out with this build.
I was also wondering what metal I use for a frame, tube or what?
What should I build the frame out of, plans, and any other knowledge you all have that can help me.

Welcome to the forum.

Forget using riding mower parts; for the most part, they're only built for low speed applications. The diff may be ok, depending on what type; I've heard horror stories about them exploding...

As for the front end, there's pretty much no usable parts that could be used on a high speed kart. Again, they're made for low speed applications...

My advice to you, at this point, is cruise the forum & the internet & find a design that catches yor eye, the simpler the better unless you have advanced design & fabrication skills but, nothing too simple, you want it to withstand the power of that engine.

IIWM, I'd be looking at a mini buggy; I've seen 125cc 2 stroke powered shifter karts that are absolute animals, obviously, a 250 will be worse.

Another option besides fabricating a frame is to check craigslist or other classifieds sited for a rolling chassis (they can usually be found relatively cheap...) & mount your engine on it with a bit of fabricating...

Yeah I saw that. So you don't think the steering on a mower would work? Ill check for some stuff on Craigslist. What would I want for this much power

You might want to have a look at this book, it's a step by step for building a buggy up to 250cc from bike bits, I've used it for my two builds ( not to the letter, but then you don't have too ! )

Where did you get that book? And I can't seem to post websites on here.

It's on Ebay or probably Amazon if you are in the States, you will probably struggle to find any good free plans on the net they tend to be very generic or ancient. Anything that has any "intelectual property" attached to it wil come at a fee. You have already found the best free resource available if you are willing to listen to advice.

I have that same book and it is very informative. One day I will build a buggy like the one in the book, but hopefully with suspension.

I got it online from Barnes and Noble.

You cannot post links because you are still a noob to the forum. We have some anti-spam software that puts all posts in limbo for approval that have more than 1 link in them. This goes for pics from photobucket as well. As soon as you have a number of posts (I think 20)m under your belt, then all that falls away and you can post whatever you want

I have designed a frame I think could work.
It's not to be a racer just a street cruiser
It's 2 1/2ft wide and 5 1/4ft long

Simple- I may even forget the narrowing inthe frame and just go straight box frame. Dimensions will vary on width of motor.
But basically motor next to driver, chain driven 6 speed. Have the shifter next to the driver so I can just pull up or down to shift and a clutch pedal at my feet.

Bad drawings but its a basic drawing. Plan on using 1" steel od tubing but I don't know how thick walled it would need to be. Ill see about buying that book. It looks good. My neighbor built a gokart like that a couple years ago. My question is could I combine the two designs and try and get the best of both? I don't get what is bad about the shifter cart plans, are they not strong enough?
I'm too new to this to understand
