Probably required for disposal, Smaller chunks easier to handle.

We have a cement kiln plant on the other side the city... They burn recycled tires they chip, and use the ash for in the final production of the cement...... Aparently one of the last of there kind in Canada..

I heard they use shredded tires in Asphalt to help make roads smoother and quieter.
Kinda cool.
They can also be burned for power generation then the ash is sold as mentioned^.
I think I saw it on Dirty jobs!

why do you shear tires?

With tires that don't have FET tacked on when you buy them (any off road tire) there is a healthy disposal fee tacked on. Cutting them up makes it much much cheaper to dispose of them, and also reduces the volume by about 60%. Short version is we make more money because we get to keep the disposal fee rather than passing it on down the line.
