I made an adapter to put a free flow air filter on my gx160. I machined it out of Mylar (hard plastic). The OD is 2&3/8" to put popular air filter, and the ID fits the large push on filters. I modified a V/C breather to fit this, will get correct filter later. With this, I can modify it to put on a big 4&1/" x 5" filter.....
What do you guys think? I also added a vacuum port for the crank case vent..... :cheers2:

Edit: I also made a choke lever retention arm. Works great! I wiggled it,and jiggled it, and it dont/wont come off....

These are EASY to make. The machine great with a nice smooth finish. And it takes like 10 minutes to machine it (manual machine) and cut off. The rest is hand tool work. Maybe an hour, having to find drill bits, taps, ect.... If it works well, ill make a few and put em in the DIYGKMP

McKutz, this one has a small lip I machined into the end. This filter I modified for my use and it now snaps into place, like the lid on a 35mm film can. They sell filters like this, with a 2&3/8" ID. That will slide onto this adapter, and secure with a clamp like normal.

Meh...

No, great work Jim

As you would probably know, when it comes to machining, if it takes an hour to make one, you should be able to knock out 20 in two hours :lolgoku: Setup is the longest part of the process...

Have you seen my choke arm retention system?

On my bike I did about the same as Jim. Used a strip of SS, made a little tab to hold down the lever, and bolted up to the existing bolt hole for the plastic airbox thingy. I even reused the original hardware.

Thats a nice filter piece you got there! You turn it out of aluminum? I can see you polished the $h!% out of it. LoL You know,I thought about drilling and tapping for a screw like you did, but figured I might mess it up. Now , I just might do it after all. It looks better like that.
Jumping subjects again.... On the filter adapter you got, did you leave it round at the carb or did you mill in some flats? My view is a tad distorted. I programmed something similar, but wanted to wait till I pick a filter before I machine it. It will be out of stainless. What does the inside look like at the filter end?

:wai: Mighty fine job there firemanjim on both the adapter and the choke hold down but can that filter flow enough air? We machine ours out of alum. instead of being flat, we machine a taper like funnel from the adapter opening to the carb throat, that way the incoming air is not hitting a wall causing turbulance effect.

Yep but, being ali, I didn't have to polish it too hard...

Start with a centre punch & take your time; I think I used about a 2mm drill bit...

Once I finished turning it, it was round but, after marking it off the carb, I cut it down & filed it to the same shape as the carb

What does the inside look like at the filter end?

Check out this post for all the info & pics of the adaptor.

If I had a choice, I would've used a filter with a bigger neck & made an adaptor like the one I recently made for Jim-L-Ls minibike

The ID has a 22° taper.... I used that filter for now, I will be getting a bigger one later today. I had that on hand,so i used it....:lolgoku:

 That ought to do the job. It is hard to tell from the picture if there was a taper there. We run UNI filters as they do just of good of a job as those high dollar K&N's.
