hilliard clutch

Hello,

I got everything hooked up with my Predator 6.5hp engine and a hilliard clutch. the kid took the cart on the road for a couple minutes. It started to smoke a lot. I went up and looked and it looked like the clutch was spraying some grease. Is this normal? I did not grease anything. Any ideas?

Well, let's know some few more details first..

what hilliard clutch?
karts weight (incl your kid) and gear ratio for starters.
(i.e. toothcount on the axle vs toothcount on the clutch)

And what else did you do to harm the clutch?
Like let's say limiting the throttle for your kid to be safe and your clutch to be toast )

just explain what you did the best you can.
And if in doubt.. add pictures (we looooove pictures )

PS for now I'd say, either your gearing is way off, or you limited the throttle and burned your clutch that way

Clutches also need a drop of oil every now and then to lube the surface between the outer and inner parts. That may be the source of the grease.

Not sure of the model of the clutch. The clutch sprocket is 10 and the axle is 48. Didn't adjust throttle stop. The chain does have a lot of play. The chain cannot be shortened any further. Won't fit with another link out. I did raise the motor up to take out some play. I could raise it further.

Ah.. suspension..
so more a small buggy than a go kart..

gearing should at least be 6:1

so 10T clutch 60T axle.. otherwise the torque of your engine isn't big enough and the clutch will not fully engage...
and in the end it'll overheat (smoke burn.. be rendered useless)

Chain should be tighter than what you have in the pictures...
So if full links do not provide the needed tension, buy a half link and/or adjust the engine mounts (that's why there are slots in the engine base plate originally )

report back when you installed a 60T axle sprocket
