A little about myself:

I've always been interested in cars and any kind of gas engines. I moved on from Hondas to BMWs. My latest adventure involves finishing my first engine swap project. I put a LS6 engine that i rebuilt with a T56 camaro trans into my 1998 BMW M3 coupe (e36).

Go karting:

A year or so ago my uncle found out that i was interested in cars and internal combustion engines. He gave me a go kart that he had built a long time ago.

steel tube frame
cable actuated disc brake (connected
cable actuated throttle
chain-driven
centrifugual style clutch
turf tires with inner tubes

Briggs and Stratton
260cc (i think)
single piston

I need help identifying the engine so that I can start figuring out how to fix it.

i got it running, but the thing seems pretty finnicky and only works when it wants to. Before i changed the rear gearing setup, we paced the kart with my friend's S1000RR at 41 mph. I'd like to futher modify the engine for better acceleration, better top speed, and more reliability. At this point, reliability is my number one priority and i think i can go from there.

I'm really thinking of ditching the B&S engine and just buying an HF Predator 212. it seems that everyone has these and parts are readily available for maintenance and upgrading.

O the 212 is a GREAT kart engine..... Its a bored and stroked 6.5 hp engine. Great low end and high end too.... Cant go wrong......
By the numbers, I think you have a 7.5 hp engine currently, made in may of 78..... ? Just got home, fixxin to look it up.....

For anyone else reading, he wants to know what engine size he has. He PMed me the #'s.... 130202~~~0700-00~~~ last one was just date code..... 7805??
EDIT ### Its a 5hp...... look at the engine cover..... dohh!

So... if you were going 41mph "before" what are you doing now? What is/was your gears/ratio... both then and now?. 41mph w/ a 5hp... kinda seems incredible. But if you were doin 41mph... I can understand wanting more acceleration.

I would also highly recommend it:thumbsup:. Not only an upgrade in hp and motor age... but(as you stated) the upgrades are easily found and guarenteed more ppl nowadays will now more bout the HF212(clone), than that B&S. Dont get me wrong... the B&S will out last 3-5 clones, but 'if' your motor was made in 78'... yea... probably time to upgrade to something else that is more reliable. Then one day if you run cross a used Honda GX200... youll know about it already cause thats what the clone was designed from.... However, IMHO, the Honda is MUCH quieter, has more accessories that can be bought, and will outlast 3-5+ clones... plus its a Honda!

Post pics... some of us cant read:lolgoku:.
