I originally planned to copy an existing design of my neighbor, but it turns out the requirements are a bit different.
Chain goes from pedals to a 16T sprocket, freewheeled to the MY1018 motor, then using a fixed 16T sprocket further back to the 23T rear axle of which only one wheel is driven.
But....the 1018 is too fast, 30km/h with no proper brake for kids isn't something that feels right - using the 16T sprocket and the original design doesn't allow for a smaller sprocket, so I'm switching to a MY1016 (already ordered) with a long shaft to which I can mount 2 smaller sprockets. Unfortunately the MY1016 is only rated at 350W (the 1018 -> 450W). But my son's not into speed but into torque, so he has 2 tractor tyres on the rear axle and wants to dig mud. While I can calculate the speed, and also torque, I have no feeling which torque I really need for this.
Then I'm not sure which Controller to choose, there are so many and all of them seem very similar, sure I need the right voltage (36V, bought a e-bike-li-ion pack for it) and enough wattage, but all the other stuff.
Another unclear point is the throttle. The original has a thumb throttle with charge display mounted to the brake handle, but that's far from optimal, as you want your hands on the steering wheel while accelerating, so I ordered a HX thumb throttle which is very small and can fit a 3D printed steering knob (tractor-alike) mounted to the steering wheel. So that at least seems under control, but I'm happy to receive other thoughts as well.
Let me know if I better switch over to the electric section, I was just a bit overwhelmed when I started reading there.
