I really would think that appropriately-sized ERW is more than sufficent for the vast majority of projects on this forum.

Regarding chromoly, I have heard that in order for it to retain its original strength it as to me properly heat-treated after welding, or it's a total waste of money. Anybody able to verify this?


:confused: We have done multiple strength tests before and after welding for comparison purposes and have seen no noticeable differences in structural integrity of the tubing, and SAE and NHRA does not require heat treatment after chromoly welds for rollcage requirements, which is what we follow, so it hasnt struck me as an issue, i will try to research this more! another point is all of our rollcages and chassis are tig welded, so perhaps it was due to other peoples welding? anyways, you have piqued my interest, but as you said, for home-built karts, electroweld tube is substantial and by far cheaper than chromoly.

I made my own jd2 model three tubing bender, got the plans with all materials needed from chopper building forum. Costed me about three hundred dollars plus purchase of dies, the dies are what cost the big bucks. Proper tools for the job are priceless and a heck of a lot less frustrating, working with wrong tools for the job.
