Hello everyone,

Just finish building my kart and the clutch was pouring smoke. I tried it a couple times and still the same smoke. I've got 10 inch tires, 4 inches wide. 10 tooth cent clutch, 48 tooth gear. I'm about 240 lbs. I have a feeling my ratio is to small.

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Elliot.

ratio is indeed too high...
depending on the power of your engine you'll need likely something in the realms of 60Teeth on your axle sprocket.

Thing is, now that you already cooked your clutch, chances are it's already rendered useless anyways :(
very lightly sand the clutch shoes (DO NOT sand the bell itself!)
replace sprocket and try again, if it still starts smoking, the clutch will be your main issue and it needs to be replaced as well.

Thanks for the super quick reply guys! 208cc clone, so I assume 6.5 ish hp. So I should grab a 60 tooth and a new clutch? Does this decrease acceleration and increase speed? I suppose I don't really know how fast it is since the clutch wasn't functioning properly.

Thanks again!

Do not smoke a clutch in some states it is a known cause of Chancer! In Texas it is known to cause birth defects, see FreeRunner's or Poboy's posts for proof. :roflol:

I didn't smoke it on purpose, haha. Didn't really want to buy a second clutch! Is there anything I should do to a new clutch? Oil, or grease or anything? I'll purchase a new gear tomorrow, so I should grab a 60 tooth right?

Thanks!

Well....reread itsid's post about trying to save your old one. And the only thing you need to oil on a centrifugal clutch is the very center. Yes ...get a 60....and just incase you don't know measure tooth tip to tooth tip....3/8" is #35 .....1/2" is #40/41....

The 4.8:1 would have a higher top speed. but you would never get it to roll from a stop.
6:1 is a good all around ratio. Will go from a stop and probably do about 25 to 30 tops

Hey guys, (shout out to hellion for the sick post!)

So I slapped the 60t on with the new clutch and she started smoking again.... The brake is not on and I'm not pressing it while driving. Could this just be factory grease burning off? I was flooring it too, to avoid the clutch from slipping. Clutch was from princess auto. I also added a few drops of oil to the centre as informed from a nice gentleman on here.

Thanks!

Too much weight for that gear ratio sorry to say. 4.8:1 isnt for everybody.

Oh it just never ends with this guy^:mad2:

Anyway you may have already ruined your clutch with the old 48 tooth. :(
Hence still smoking. See post #2 above.
But hey 17.99 on ebay from GoPowerSports.com

Well...it could be because it's new. One thing to check (if you haven't) is that the drive wheel turns very easily...(in fact spins)... without the chain attached and off the ground. Another is not to adjust the chain too tight...you want just a hair of sag in it.

Finally, how many teeth on the new clutch? (You SHOULDN'T have gearing issues at this point....but I still gotta ask....)

So...exactly where do you interpret this is not a new clutch?

"could it be factory grease burning off"
"new"
"from Princess Auto"
Jeeze....Eric!
