Just posting up to say hi. Been lurking for a bit and decided to sign up. You most likely won't see me post much for a while. With it being still nice and warm outside, I have lots of outdoor projects I need to work on. Plus I need to finish cleaning out and organizing my garage/future work shop.

After a recent discussion with the wife, I was given permission to work on "projects" in the garage once it was cleaned up and organized. As long as the projects stay in the garage and don't spread to the house.

I have quite a few different projects I can build, however I decided to build a go kart when I found myself driving my riding mower around the yard when I didn't need to mow. So I figured its time to build a kart.

I actually have the budget to just buy one, but that falls into "buying a toy I don't need" category with my wife. Yet building one falls into the "project/hobby" category which is fine.

Its been about 15 years since I did any sort of welding. So I am going to have to learn the skill. If there is anyone local to me that would be willing to teach me a few things I would appreciate it.

I have decided to start with the Itsy Bitsy from Spider Carts. Since its a very basic and relatively small project I figure its a good place to start. I have a 2yr old who is not ready for it, so I am going to build it sans engine. Let him play around on it down the hill in the back yard. Then when he is ready I will mount an engine.

After I get that one under my belt, my plan is to build a Trax II from Edge. It fits the criteria that I want out of a Kart. After that I may give the Taipan a go. I would love to build a ST2 from Badlands one day in the future.

That's about all I can think of for now. Looking forward to using this forum to help me accomplish my project goals.

Welcome to the forum. This place can really help you in the builds, there is a ton of info here. Also, I used to live in Allentown (1983-1989) was young but really liked it up there.

Like most other things, welding is like riding a bike; you never forget how, you just need some practice to get back in the rhythm...

Welcome to the forum

That's what I am hoping. However, I have only ever done Arc and Acetylene. Never got to do TIG or MIG. I am looking at going towards a Flux Core. Although the maintenance department at work has two TIG/MIG (not sure which they are) rigs. I may see if I can talk them into letting me use them, or help me do the welding.

But first I have to get have a garage/yard sale and get rid of all the extra crap I don't need.

MIG or, more to the point, FCAW is the easiest of all; Get yourself a cheap 140A flux core welder (the 90A units aren't worth the space...), do some practice on some scrap & you'll be ready to go in no time

If you can oxy/ace you can probably master TIG but, those babies are expensive...
