I bought this on Craigslist. The guy said it's a Manco 485. I was looking for an owner's manual, but there seems to be a few different versions of the 485. Can anyone identify this? It has a 5 hp Tecumseh.

Also, I want to replace the torque converter. It says Comet on it, but that's really all I know. Sorry, I'm new to Go Karts. Should I replace the whole set-up, or just the TC?

Thanks for any help or advice.
Richard

What would you replace the torque convertor with?

I want to replace it with a new one. :) Sorry, I wasn't too clear on that. It's giving a little trouble and seems to be worn a little. Maybe I can clean and lube it and see how it goes.
btw, does it appear to be a Comet 30? or something else?

Comet 30 series those are the buttons for it see that hole in the 5th picture? You should have six of these contact spots when the tq shifts, if you have some more missing I can imagine some jerking and possible spring damage is what I had to fix on the one I bought off Craigslist. The link Scout provided broke down your driver and driven. Like a transmission to a car no lubrication/parts missing equals you thinking its broken/poor performance. Just need to be rejuvenated.

I would definately just refurbish the TC you have. It won't cost you too much besides a few dollars and time. Have a look at the sticky that was linked and do some maintenance

As far as the buttons go, only three are ever used. The other three are for opposite rotation with a reverse wound spring.

Thanks guys. I'm still hoping someone can help me identify exactly which version of the 485 this is.

That could prove difficult. ...especially if you are just looking for the last 2 or 3 digits......those could change just by color......

The real question is why??????? What is your reason for wanting to know??????? You probably don't need to. ......

I guess the only reason is for ordering replacement parts.

For example, I need the plastic cover that goes over the torque converter, belt, and driven pulley . As I look through the different manuals (all for Manco 485), they list different part numbers for the cover, so I don't know which one to order.

Take a pic of it and post it. ...someone can probably tell just by looking. ...if not. ..they will probably ask for a couple of measurements.....but that will get you going. ..and from there. ..may lead to an accurate ID....

EDIT: OOPS....sorry...see you have already posted pics....help is on the way...

Those covers should all be the same. Comet never made many models and the 30 is pretty standard. FWIW, even a knock off cover should fit, as many of them are clones. Additionally, it's ABSOLUTELY worth reviving. I brought mine back from the grave pretty easily. It was pretty heavily rusted in areas and the engagment faces were pretty well pitted. Take a look. A Comet is a Comet and before you throw it in the rust heap, either consider restoring it yourself or offer it up to a member here and get yourself some extra spending cash!
