Heres what I picked up for $60. I think I did good.

Hello, new here

I just picked up locally for $60. It is a Manco Coyote II LXT from what it says in the floor pans. It is in poor shape but I think it was worth it, at least thats what I think since I have NEVER owned or even ridden in a go kart before. I am old, im 29, I bought this as a father/son project for my 9 year old. I would love to get it running with the help of you great wise people. I am NOT a small engines expert, but if I can change engines on cars, I feel confident I can do this. Ok, heres some info of what I got:

This is the kart, you can see the paint has some light surface rust and its dirty and a bolt missing from the back rest.

The tires are shot, but still managed to hold air, at least to make it easier to roll it around.

I took off the black plastic shied to find this:

Says COMET 20 on the gear things.

The guy gave me the carb and a bunch of screws inside a plastic bag, so no carb installed.

Now, I think I got ahead of myself and I went ahead and purchased a Harbor Freight 6.5 OHV engine for it. I printed the online price of $109 and tried a 20% off coupon, good thing for me that the manager was not in the store at the time, and there was a LOOOOOOONNNGG line, so the cashier just took the coupon So it ended up being about $110 with taxes and 2 year replacement warranty

Where do I start with this project?? Did I do a good purchase?? Is anybody selling a carb for this Tecumseh motor? Or should I just install the Harbor Freight engine??

GREAT BUY! Live axle kart with a TAV! That is one hell of a deal. If you already purchased the harbor freight engine, then go with it. Those Tecumseh engines are junk. I think with a little TLC that would be a great kart!

Pretty decent deal you got there. From the looks of things and the money you have in it, I would install the HF engine with the torque converter drive thats there. That thing will scoot right along with that combo.
The only thing to make sure of before you take it apart or get the new engine dirty is to verify the shaft size on the new engine is the same as the old one. I would think they would both be 3/4 inch, but its best to verify before you tear into it.

That's actually a 30 series comet. I'm not sure why they stamp 20 in everything but they do. Good deal for $60. The tec carbs were always a pain which is probably why they got frustrated.

Its a great deal, the first thing I'd do would be taking the drive clutch off the motor and cleaning it so you can get proper operation. Then you would remove the motor from the kart and throw your new motor where that one went, place your torque converter drive back on the new motor with the spacing and look at all the posts from people on how to convert linkage, there are also posts on using these engines with torque converters and how people use their torque converters. Next check your disk brakes, are both pucks in place? Is it adjusted properly? There are posts for this too, or should be, the search bar will be your best friend at this point.

The Tecumseh that was on the kart was actually a great engine despite what homeboy up there said but you're missing the carb, I would see if you can't craigslist the engine for 15 bucks and use that to offset some of the cost. We'll be here if you have any real questions. That is seriously where i'd start though.

Nice catch! I had a similar Manco (Cut off the roll cage) and I replaced the axle sproket with a 40tooth from ebay. With the HF motor and TQ converter, it hit 38MPH with my 200lbs on it and climbed any hill traction would allow.
