That's a myth, dogs have excellent memory.
You don't have to hit a dog to get the point across, just shove it's face in it and say bad dog or no. They need to hear words over and over again, same words everytime. Using a sentence won't get you anywhere.
My black lab had a huge problem of getting in the trash. Last time she ever did it, I found her cowering in the corner, she knew.
I have a border collie that's the same way. It takes time, but repitition will make it sink in. A dog has to learn from the alpha what is right and what is wrong.
