That's a myth, dogs have excellent memory.

You don't have to hit a dog to get the point across, just shove it's face in it and say bad dog or no. They need to hear words over and over again, same words everytime. Using a sentence won't get you anywhere.

My black lab had a huge problem of getting in the trash. Last time she ever did it, I found her cowering in the corner, she knew.

I have a border collie that's the same way. It takes time, but repitition will make it sink in. A dog has to learn from the alpha what is right and what is wrong.

yeh i ment when they're real young you gota tell them whats wrong when they're doing it. Once they know, they know.

My dogs the same as yours with the cats food haha. I only have to catch him looking at it now and he ****s himself

I guess as a puppy and you are training it, I've known folks who think dogs don't have memories of anything past 1 minute.

I had an 8 week old border collie cross one of our horses, horse promptly stepped on said border collies leg and broke it. Dog never went near the horses again.

if you're guna punish a puppy you gota do it while its doing something wrong. 5 seconds later and it'll have no idea why you're yelling at it

Even Cesar Milan says the same thing. If you not quick in your punishment, it is of no use

Make sure your dog doesn't associate punishment with you, rather than his behavior.

Dog chews shoe. You arrive the next morning and punish dog. Dog learns that when you arrive, bad things happen.

Also, make sure you don't teach your dog to come to you to get punished. If you do that, he will turn into one of those dogs that doesn't come when he's called.

That isn't a myth. How will they know what they've done wrong if you don't tell them while they're doing it?

We have a new puppy too. Treats work real well in promoting a good behavior (duh). If it bites or gets aggressive towards you, ignore him. If he tries to jump up on you or attack you, knee him down, and then don't look at him. Make sure the dog runs and gets plenty of exercise. We have a pure bread lab puppy, and she runs like you wouldn't believe. Also, in all of your comands, say the exact same thing and in the same tone. Teach him that "NO" means stop doing whatever he is doing. If he stops, give him a treat.

Don't ever chase your dog, this trains him to run away from you. Instead, show him a treat and say COME!. If you do this enough he will come when he is called, because he know he may get a treat. Don't give him one every time, but do it enough to think that there is a decent chance.

its true that if they know its wrong then they wouldnt do it most likely.

if they get beat and they didnt know what they did was wrong than thats abuse.

They need exercise! We have a 1 year old Hunterway. She will run away to the neighbors to play with their dog if we don't exercise her. She will run all day, like today she has run at least 6km full pace, following me on the 2 and 4 wheelers, and its only lunch time, lol.

To get it to listen, you just have to be repetitive, yes it get as boring as **** but you need to do it. Giving it treats always helps.

And you need to be very patient, it cant read your mind, lol.

Random bit here. We used this with both of our labs (1 black 1 yellow). Due to treats and food as rewards being expensive and fattening, we used baby carrots. They're crisp which help to clean their teeth and are also very cheap and healthy rewards.

No it is a myth, Ill say it again dogs have excellent memory. If you pick up the shredded shoe and show it to him, that dog knows that shoe and knows that he chewed it.

I dont advocate punishing the dog for it after the fact harshly but you can verbally punish it. Picking up whatever it did, showing it to him and shouting no, will work. Punishing the dog in the act is the most effective.

If you find a nice pile of dookie on your carpet and drag his butt over to it and shove its nose in it, it knows thats his poop, and your punishing the dog for his poop. Eventually that dog stops crapping on your floor, same effect.

I have raised many pups into great dogs. I have tought other peoples dogs to do the basic tricks in 10 minutes or less. Sit, stay, roll over fully, shake, you name it. Old dogs, young dogs, dog whisperer doesnt have anything on me.

If you punish the dog for eating a shoe after he is done and he is sleeping in his bed, he's not going to know what your talking about.

Yes it will, I'm not saying you drag the dog out of bed and punish it. I'm telling you that dog knows what it did, if you pick up a torn shoe and show it to the dog it knows, a firm no will imprint a memory of "torn up shoe = no!" I'm not saying to beat the dog, or touch it in any way, save the real punishment for in the act.

I am going off personal experience of raising great dogs. Ive treated them all this way and it is effective.
